Gianluca Pellerito

I noticed this video about a month ago and I agree, the left hand is something to which we could all aspire. I also notice he makes stacks the way I've always made them - with broken cymbals!

Meh. I’ve got a better left hand, his posture is weird, and I bet he’d fall apart if he had to play with somebody who had bad time and kept changing tempo. He seems like a typical bedroom YouTube drummer.

Good feel, though. And decent chops. Just needs to work on posture and actually playing with people instead of just tracks.

What makes you think he doesn't play with people too? I love when people throw around the ol' "yeah, but I bet he couldn't play...", not knowing what he can or can't play. Just such a hater statement.

Man, I thought that was pretty kick@ss, I'd love to be that good ;-)

I googled him and he's definitely not (just) stuck playing in his bedroom youtubing. He's currently at Berklee and has a pretty interesting background. Like I said, I 'd love to be that good (but I'm a finance guy with an MBA instead of a music degree so it's ok, I can't expect to ever be that good ;-))

Playing open handed makes everything look cool. If I were just starting drums I’d go open handed-I think switching sides of your brain opens new creative doors. I like this style he emulate it well. I was thinking about this recently- how we spend huge amounts of time practicing rudiments and emulating fills , styles of our favorites drummers. I wonder do we spend enough time being creative in our own right. Like all my tesearch years was about doing something novel and making a contribution but I’ve never felt compelled to do so with drums-I think that was a wrong attitude.

Eh. Needs to fix his posture still. But I’m glad he can actually play live.

Because sooner or later you want to start making money if you’re gonna go to the trouble of hauling around drums to play with people ;)

Even Vinnie Colaiuta does his fair share of 2 & 4 ;)

And someone looking at Vinnie chopping away as a youngster might have said something like "Yeah, but can he be convincing playing “Mustang Sally”?"

I like Vinnie, but I'm not aware of his history before Frank Zappa. To me it's like he just appeared all of sudden with Zappa, and then immediately went into studio work in L.A. after he left Zappa. So I couldn't say.

But certainly after Zappa, when I heard Vinnie laying it down on Robben Ford's first album, there was no question the guy could lay down a tasteful backbeat - which is why he's probably in the top five of guys you call for a session anywhere.

Lol, seriously? Helps to do a bit of research before jumping to conclusions :)
Maybe you do have a better left hand. But frankly, if I had the choice of a better left hand and better posture, or being out there in public performing with the technical ability of this kid, I'd take the latter all day long. Already he could make a nice living just from being a clinician if he wants.

Yeah, the thing is with Vinnie is that he just loves to play and will and can play anything, and has played anything and everything. And I'm glad he did and still does. But if he'd decided to never play a 2 & 4 pop session, I've no doubt he would still have made a very good living as the drummer's drummer with the likes of Zappa, Holdsworth, Corea and every other virtuoso situation that he's always been involved in and is still in demand for. That kid in this thread is young and full of chops, but he's at Berklee, no doubt studying every aspect of playing and reading. As he matures he will know when it's required be less busy and I've little doubt he can lay down Mustang Sally. Right now though, he's probably thinking of being the best technical drummer he can be, just like Dave Weckl always did.

And then Dave Weckl met Freddie Gruber, and everything changed. Heck, Neil Peart did the same thing with Freddie.

However, I'm sure his pedigree will let him know when to be less busy, but I've met a lot of guys that went through Berklee that never figured that out too. There's a lot of out-of-work guys here in L.A. that went to the big schools. So that's no real guarantee, either.

You would pay to see him do a clinic? I’m asking seriously.

Hm. I watched the Caravan clip (above) and am underwhelmed. No dynamics, no ideas to speak of, not even a good sound. Just chops.
He sure can play but IMHO there´s plenty of room for improvement regarding taste and musicality.

That was 4 years ago... he's probably a teenager for kryst's sake. I'm guessing he's gotten a sh!tload better since then (wrt dynamics, ideas, etc..).

You guys must unbelieveable players... I wish more of you posted vids of yourselves. I started paying in '82 and I absolutely suck compared to that guy.
