Default i need some new idols!

im a 14 year old drummer. i have been playing forever, and i found what is essentially my style of drumming over time and lots of practice. i just love to groove, and all of the musical contexts i perform in allow for me to go crazy with it. my main influences have been steve gadd, john bonham, stanton moore, steve jordan, etc. - lots of the most musical guys with the most funky feel. i attempt to incorporate funk and groove playing into most music i play. while i know i could never attempt to master all of the work of these inspirations that i discussed, i feel like ive exhausted my immediate resources pertaining to learning and practicing their music. so if somebody could help, can someone please recommend me a drummer that i could completely immerse myself in learning his/her work? and don't say travis barker or someone. i need someone who can groove, who's musical, and who has chops. thanks SO much guys, and sorry about the long rant.

Keith Carlock is an intense groover, and ofcourse Ndugu Chancler (famous for his grooving on some Michael Jackson songs, but has done some really good playing for Miles Davis as well). Personally, I think he's a lot more groove and musicality and not much chops at all. But that is sort of his approach to/philosophy of the instrument. JoJo Mayer plays pretty advanced stuff at times, but he sure knows how to make a groove feel good. The same goes with Gavin Harrison, but he has a sort of different feel (at least with Porcupine Tree and 05 Ric). These are the ones that jump to my mind immedietly =)

There's a great drumming website with lots of great musicians to check out.
It's www.drummerworld.com :P.

No, seriously, to my mind come Vinnie Colaiuta, Gary Novak, Benny Greb, Steve Smith, Johnny Rabb, Bill Stewart, Brian Blade, Dennis Chambers, Nathaniel Townsley, David Garibaldi, Horacio Hernandez, .... Sure I forgot some.

Virgil Donati is one of my favourites, not a funky drummer, more of a tight and precise rock/fusion drummer, and he's got the sickest chops you can imagine.

And I very much second Keith Carlock, Jojo Mayer and Gavin Harrison.

How about Danny Carey? Tool isn't exactly funky, but Volto is. Some really cool things going on in that band...check youtube and you can see some videos.

Maybe look outside your usual frame of reference, somebody who plays a different style to what you usually enjoy playing. Might need to give it a bit of time but you'd almost certainly find things you could incorporate into your playing that would give you fresh ideas. Maybe someone like Stewart Copeland, who certainly grooves but in a different way to all the drummers you mentioned. I started off as a huge Bonham fan and went to great lengths to emulate his style, so I think I know just what you're talking about. +1 on Jojo Mayer, I think you'd find lots of useful stuff there.

Since you live on the dark side of the moon, lol, you MUST know Nick Mason! To me, he's the master of NOT overplaying the song and playing exactly what is needed to compliment the music. You could learn a lot listening to Pink Floyd.

Cozy Powell

I'm with you man, I love watching killer musicians but I need groove. The fusion stuff that a lot of these cats play just depresses me. I'm sure it's hard to play but it just comes across as bland noodling written for other musicians.

Two guys that stand out and grab my attention these days are Stanton Moore and Benny Greb. I saw Galactic live in NOLA in June...and I've been inspired to get a funk project of my own rolling, ever since.

Along with Garibaldi, check out Gaylord Birch on the old Cold Blood albums. If you get into either of these guys, get Dave's instructional stuff. Often what sounds like cool latin improvisation is actually very carefully worked out superimposition of patterns and time signatures.

Modern folks you might want to check out would be Alan Evans (Soulive's drummer, similar feel to Jordan), Adam Dietch, John Santos and Jay Lane. Modern funksters. Also, I love Julio Baretto for that cool latin vibe over jazz.

The man has great tastes! Garibaldi is the funkiest drummer alive, IMO.

Soulive is awesome and Adam Dietch's drumming is pretty amazing. Dietch turned me onto Go Go, which I just recently started digging into. Will check out the others, thanks!

Garabaldi was my hero in the mid 70's. He doesn't play trad grip much anymore, but he was the master of the Buddy Rich finger control bit. Listen to the 16ths on the snare on Get Your Feet Back On The Ground and how he pulls rimshots out while riding the snare and playing off time on the hat. All those early albums had a Chester Thompson instrumental like Squib Cakes on them. Then there's something insane like Serious Side (which I think they still play)

Two of my favorite Cold Blood/Gaylord Birch songs are how they energized the end of Stevie's You Are The Sunshine Of My Life (really tight but driving Squib Cakes kind of groove) and Baby I Love You which is one of my all time favorites. The way the guitar and clav set up this funky syncopated groove and then the bass comes in upside down, only to have Gaylord lock up with that and you realize that the guitar and clav parts were even more syncopated than you thought. This song will really separate the true funksters from the pretenders. It's even fun to watch people try to dance to it. Gaylord also drove many of the Pointer Sister hits.

i forgot to mention clyde stubblefield and john jabo starks - their performance in "cold sweat" with the off beat placement is off the hook.

i also forgot zigaboo modeliste, whose grooves are just so tight and funky and play around with the pocket.

man, i forgot bout a ton of drummers - ie justbeen digging back to old school steve gadd stuff lately. steely dan and such

Ian, I wouldn't recommend anyone be influenced by me. Hell, I'm not even influenced by me :)

Fishbones, have you heard much of Bill Bruford? I can hardly do anything that he does but he gives me ideas.

And there's no percussionist on these tracks playing with him, it's all just BB ...
