Marching timpani were often fiberglass, and smaller sizes (I don't recall anyone marching with 32" timps!)

Also, those are 'kids' marching with those. Their backs still work!!

I did it for a few weeks in '07 with the Kingsmen Alumni Corps. I just about died with the smallest one.

There were huge numbers of injuries to backs and probably of heat exhaustion, also. We had marching marimbas also. I have no proof, but I'm sure the injury rate was what led to the tuned percussion going to the sidelines.

It was an excellent incentive to practice to insure making the snare line!

Played a 2.5 octave kelon xylophone in the late 80s in parade marching bands in high school. It sucked. Also played old Ludwig tri-toms and marching snares with a sling and leg rest. Never did the marching timps as they were just going out of style in the 80s.

Reminds me of the drums in the Roman styled movies. Like the British use on horseback
