Default Don't think I am hearing this right.. Josie

A friend gave me a drumless copy of "Josie" by Steely Dan. I've been playing it as straight eighths and upon playback it sounds too busy.... I can't quite work out what is going on there. Does anyone have any insight or a transcription?

Thanks in advance.

That's because the hi hat part isn't straight eighths. Listen closely to the recording - Jim Keltner is leaving out some notes and accenting certain ones. It sounds more "snaky".

Jim's playing the upbeat on the hats most of the time, also with a delicate touch which makes it sound less crowded again. He shifts to the upbeat on the ride for the chorus.

You can keep it flowing nicely with 8ths if you get the feel right. Never sussed out those "snaky" little lines he adds, though. Really classy.

Just looked at the drum cover link - he's going upbeats with the 16ths anticipating the one. Nice cover link - lovely drumming. It's really hard to stop playing after the fade out :)
