I don't know .. but I would guess they are more than likely Paiste. He's always been fanatical about high quality Paiste Signature Traditionals.. and oversized hihat cymbals. It's because of him I use 15" Paiste hats.. never tried the 17".. just too big for me! plus I don't have a roadie to lug them around
He endorses Paiste but he uses other cymbals for recording sometimes. Just like he endorses Yamaha but you see pics of him playing old Ludwigs all the time. The Verbs tracks I've heard don't sound like his signature 17" Traditionals over 17" Dark Energy hi hat pairing. I've seen him play old Zildjian 14's quite few times. I would almost guess that's what he was using on the Verbs tracks.
No, it's not a phony, but it's common practice for endorsers to use different gear than their usual setup in the studio depending on what sound they are going for on a particular track.
