Angle of Kick Pedal Beater Striking Drum Head?

I have a new (used) 18" Sonor Bass Drum, part of the Safari Kit I just bought.
My 90s DW 5000 pedal attaches to the lift under the bass drum and sits back from the head accordingly. Too close and the chain hits the hoop, so the lift is pushed back almost as far as it goes.
When the beater head hits the bass drum, the angle of impact is a bit over 90 degrees (around 95), with 90 being a straight angled hit.
Therefore, when the beater head hits, it seems double up a bit.
Is this a design fault with the riser or the DW5000 pedal construction?
I thought the beater head should ideally hit at 90 degrees but can't figure out how to get this done on the bass drum. The spurs' adjustment doesn't allow for enough of a tilt to angle the bass drum back to compensate.
Any suggestions/advice?

No and no.

Beater hitting straight-up is not the rule and its not the pedals fault.

I would tell you the angle my beater hits at, but you wouldn't believe me.

The riser is going to keep you from a straight-up angle due to the hoop width.... its just the nature of the riser. Adjust your foot board height to be comfortable.

I'll try that. Didn't realize the DW5000 adjusted footboard height since I've never experimented with that before.
