Budget PA System for basement band

Hey guys,

I play in a small band of 4 people and I'm looking for a good budget PA setup (less than $700 of possible). We just need good vocal clarity over the guitar/drums and hopefully something that can sound pretty good if we want to jam music through it. This is just for a basement band scenario, but perhaps small venues as well if we ever need it for that.

What do you guys recommend? I have a crappy PA right now which is 120 watts, it just doesn't have the balls we need. I'm not sure how much power I need.

Thanks a bunch.

I'd say you'd need a decent $300US unpowered mixer with at least 8 XLR inputs like this one:

and a couple of powered monitors ($120 each):

Should do the trick. The nice thing with using the powered monitors as your main speakers is that once you start expanding your PA, you can use them as regular floor monitors. The Kustom monitors are exactly the same as their main PA speakers, just angled so that they can be laid on the floor.

Of course for practice purposes, I've heard that these are an excellent investment: http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/JamHub-BedRoom-Silent-Rehearsal-Studio?sku=620796

I have a Peavey XR8600 I got for around 500 new on ebay. Paired with some reasonable speakers and cheap floor monitors and it works a treat for lightweight gigs. Over budget though i guess.

definitely buy second hand, there are always people who want to sell (or need to sell to upgrade).
