Hi Gang

I am considering purchasing a Djembe or Darbuka for my father as a gift. He is disabled and suffers from chronic depression. I know I feel a lot better after playing my kit for a bit, and I thought it might be theraputic if he had a drum of his own to play.

Due to space and budget limitations I am considering purchasing a djembe or Darbuka for him. I am a complete newbie when it come to hand drums, and am unsure what brands are goood, and what to look for in general with regards to these instruments......

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks

Hello

I have played lots of djembes and most are relatively poor quality. I really like the sound of a quality drum like the ones from Drumskull drums. They cost more than most djembes, but with a bit of care, it will last a life time. I predict that their value will only increase with time(similar to great vintage drums such as Gretsch) so if you ever want to sell it, you are likely to get your money back. You might also consider the bugarabu drum which is similar to a djembe but usually played in pairs or threes like a conga set up. You could buy one now, and add another later. In the photo I have attached you can see at the very back my huge dundun and in front of it a couple congas. Moving forward to the left are three djembes and to the front right is a single bugarabu. All are Drumskull Drums. http://www.drumskulldrums.com/

I have a doumbek but not a darbouka. I have played both. There is some confusion over the name of these drums. Some distinguish between the two: a darbouka has external lugs while a doumbek has internal lugs. I prefer playing a doumbek because the slaps seem to come easier. Playing doumbeks and djembes require quite different techniques. I get great enjoyment from playing both.

Another way to go would be to buy a frame drum. These are very light and can be much quieter than a doumbek or djembe. They are also less money. I have three Cooperman frame drums that I love! http://www.cooperman.com/coopermanhanddrums.php Check out what Glen can do with a frame drum! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fB0hE-YlfzQ Remo also offers a less expensive frame drum.

Drumming is a wonderful way to heal. There is a lot of literature available about drumming and music therapy. I wish your father a speedy recovery.

Sincerely

GJS
