Default Where can I hear great drumming?

I know this is a 'how long is a piece of string' question but... as a (electric) guitar player, and someone who has not interest in playing drums, I nevertheless would love to hear some great drumming. I enjoyed the drumming at the Olympics opening ceremony, and various bands I've listened to have had great drumming sequences.

Any advice on websites, what to listen to on Spotify etc?

www.drummerworld.com and look for the section Drummers. Most of them have solos, lessons etc that may pique your interest. Youtube would be my second choice.

Well... Since you already know you're going to get 'how long is a piece of string' answers, then I'll just say listen to Tool. If the end of 46&2 doesn't make you want to sell off all your guitar gear for a drum set then something is wrong with you ;)

or The Grudge
or Vicarious
or Schism

Danny Carey knows how to end a song.

Most great drumming is hidden down inside the songs you think are great...but have never really considered what the drums are doing.

Those are the masters...

When I think of great drumming, the first thing that comes to mind is all the great drumming on the kazillions of recordings that are out there. You tube comes to mind. Live performances etc.

Check out Streetlight Manifesto.
Ska drumming is pretty simple, but the drums for this band are actually really well done and really tight.

Anything by Dream Theater is great for drums too.

Don't forget to check out the great jazz cats as well. Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Papa Joe Jones, Philly Joe Jones, to name a few. Also check out Lewis Nash for some contemporary greatness.

Wow, great answers, thanks.

A slightly different slant on the question.
What should I listen to, to hear great tracks that are just, or mainly about, the drums. Not just good drumming per se. Like the drum section at the start of the Olympics, or African drums etc?

thanks
Nick

Go see the Blue Man group if you want to see a bunch of folks beating on things.

I was going to say, think of gigs you've played where you had to work at locking in with the band and had to think about what you were doing the entire time. Now think about other gigs where you felt free. Like everything you played worked and you didn't have to think about anything. That was great drumming.

Absolutely. He posted it on facebook the other day.
The man creates genuine musical music with his drums and it's a pleasure to listen to.

On the idea of songs really highlighting the drum work(bringing it to the front of the perception of the song) I would cite...

Sound of Muzak
Porcupine tree

Aja
Steely Dan

Rosanna
Toto

I believe a mediocre song with great drums is still a mediocre song...the above also rise to the level of really good songs that are also some drumming masterpieces.

Three examples of groove, chops, feel and fire rolled into drum work.

Note: find the original recorded versions...dont start out listening to the live versions...will get a better feel of the essence of the song that way.

Anything Led Zeppelin. The drumming is not too complex for the untrained ear and it just sounds good. Listen to "Rock and Roll", among others. But all the drummers everyone else stated are top notch as well.

Thanks. I was going to suggest Jenns, but that guy is truly an artiste and I refuse to make fun of such a master ;)

There are many great bios on the main site. Check out those guys.

Alternatively, buy any recording featuring Tony Williams. :-)
