Why is it a bloody oath? since I have many Aussie friends here and I meant it.

Ian, the Aussie vernacular goes something like this:

1. Everyone is "mate"....man, woman or child (works a treat when forgetting names).
2. Every problem is adressed with the term "she'll be right, mate".
3. Everything you agree with is adressed with the term "bloody oath, mate"

:-)

Ian, you may already know that "bloody" is used in Australia and England to mean "very". So, if "my oath" is short for "my oath, this thing is true" (ie. "yes, I agree"), then "bloody oath" could be translated as "yes, I agree strongly" :)

My father is from Vienna and, despite his accent, he's tried very hard to be a dinkum Aussie. He used to say "my oath" when he agreed with something (he never quite reached the "bloody oath" stage).

Because of his accent, I used to think he was saying "my oats" and had no idea what it meant. When I was a little older I heard my big sister say "my oath" and the penny dropped.

ehehehe. and...

4. A man or woman you hold in high regard is a 'top bloke' or 'top sheila/bird/chick'.

I have an American flatmate at the moment and she is constantly amused at the Aussie slang. Probably not in a good way either...hehehehe. Bloody oath!!
