Default Really Hard Songs

Does anyone happen to have recommendations for incredibly hard songs drum wise? Not anything thats hard simply because its ridiculously fast, just something that will help push each of my limbs and time keeping ability. I honestly don't care what genre it is as long as it will push my abilities as a drummer.

Thanks for the suggestions. Probably going to pick up Hate to Lose your lovin and hot for teacher. Still looking for harder though. My hands are pretty Independent of each other, its my feet that really need to develop their own independence.

Hey Kyle, I have the perfect song; I just started learning it myself.

Do not look down by meshuggah.

I am pretty happy with my coordination but this is a really nice challenge because the bass drum pattern (and guitar riff) are in 17/16... so when each new bar of 4/4 comes around the rhythm is displaced by one 16th note.

It's not challenging physically but internalizing the rhythm and remembering the song is tricky because each bar is different.

Frank Zappa, Keep it Greasey. Have to be really sharp to play this. I can't remember if the first odd time groove in the song is 21/16 or 19/16 but i actually found it easier than the chorus groove which is 4/4. This groove comes at you really fast and your hands have to be very in sync. I gave up on the song in frustration. Must go back to it sometime. Also check out Animals as Leaders. Their songs have some of the hardest drum parts I've heard.

Check out "The Drum Also Waltzes" by Max Roach. Or if you can transcribe any of Terry Bozzio's solo ostinato performances, that might be a good thing to test your coordination to as well.

Billie Jean

and I'm not kidding

make it feel the way Leon makes it feel on the record

this is how you should gauge yourself as a player of after beat music

if you cannot place those notes where they need to be placed there is absolutely no need to work on more involved pieces

Not fast, in 4/4, but an odd feel and grouping that makes it easy to get lost. Try Bonnie the Cat by Gavin Harrison and Porcupine Tree.

We do Bad Reputation by Thin Lizzy, it was a pain in the neck at first to get the timing right.

another hard drum song because of the weird changes in his beat is Tattooed Love Boys by the Pretenders. Never played it but listening to it it has a lot going on.

I still can't get that hi-hat part down during the verse in the song Sober by Tool. The rest I can play, but the timing of that accent with the bass drum messes with me mind. I thought I had it once but I lost it again because I don't play it enough.

Simple but hard to play right: Sunday Morning by Maroon 5. Combination of a shuffle and hip hop beat that both groove independently.

Early Tower of Power. Garrabaldi is a master of displaced beats that mess with your mind. Down to the Nightclub, What is Hip, Squib Cakes, then into things like Oakland Stroke or Serious Side that are in odd time signatures. There's playing odd time or syncopation, and then there's making it groove too. Grooving like Steve Jordan is really really hard, doing displaced latin patterns while grooving is from another world.

Mr Big - Free
sounds easy....but try to keep the steady, steady, steady slow pace, bass drum fills and footwork of Simon Kirke

right there with Billie Jean for a so called 'easy tune'

Don't get me started on Simon Kirke.....his feel, push, groove and pull are sick and i aspire to have it all....lots of nuance and things that don't sound "hard" but the beauty is between the notes with simon...
