Default Which drum set do I buy?

My son has a passion for playing drums. I'm looking to buy him a nice drum set that is not too expensive but will last a while. I've narrowed it down to two sets and i'm looking for some advice as to which I should get. Thanks in advance.

1. Tama IS52KC Imperial Star Drum Set with Cymbals

2. Gretsch GE-E8256 Energy Five-Piece Drum Kit with Hardware

Honestly I would say neither of those. If you are looking to pay 600-700 for a kit you can get a lot better. One thing I would recommend is it looks like you are trying to find a complete set with cymbals. Let me tell you right now, you don't want those cymbals. Those are going to be either some no name cymbals that will get dented, or the cheapest cymbals a more well known company makes. They make these "complete" sets to try and make it seem like you are getting a better deal, when really you are getting a lesser quality kit and cymbals, and they can jack up the price. I would recommend looking somewhere like here Most of the time you will only be buying the shells, but if you can get hardware with it then do try and do that because hardware is expensive. Then buy the cymbals separately. Look at the wood type for the shells, in order from least to most expensive (best sounding?) it generally is gonna go, poplar, basswood, birch, maple. Not including some of the lesser common types of wood. I know you said it's for your kid, but if you don't mind buying used then I would highly recommend it. You can get kits for half price in some cases. Bottom line is it's your decision, everyone has drums they like and drums they don't like. Until you develop an ear for it and actually sit down and play the different kits there is no way of comparing which one will work best for you.

D2 from D drum. With new heads they tune up great. Cheap. 400 bucks for cheap cymbals, all hardware, throne and stick bag. These are perfect for anybody just starting. If your son is still interested in drums after a year sell those ones and then get something in the 700 -- 1,000 price range. No reason to spend that much right off the bat.

Buy used. Craigslist is full of people who were in your exact situation, only six months later the kid won't touch the drums anymore, and lucky to get half of what they paid for some entry level drums.

Just like others have stated before me, used is the way to go. Stay away from entry level kits that come with hardware and cymbals. Do some research and look on craigslist or ebay.

Odds are both of those kits are made in the same factory.

I didn't know that. I will have to Google it to find out who passed on.
