I'm amazed that none of you saw Keith Moon live. Guess I'm lucky enough to have seen him a dozen times. Even got to know him having spent time backstage several times when the Who played San Francisco in the late 60s.
Also saw Billy Cobham, Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker, Simon Phillips, Dino Danelli, Buddy Miles, ....the rest just drummers in famous bands...

Saw Danny Seraphine play again this past Saturday. Even as he reaches 70 in a few months, he plays his heart out and is still a world class drummer! A super humble and nice all around guy, as well! Other favorites I've seen include Dave Weckle, Steve Smith, Ritchie Hayward and Levon Helm.

Wow....what a good question! Now I've gotta do some thinking. I don't go to a ton of shows anymore, but I have seen a few over the years.

Neil Peart
Martin Chambers
Kenny Aronoff
Alex Van Halen
Max Weinberg
Bun E Carlos
Ringo
Gregg Bissonette (with Ringo....awesome)
Ed Shaugnessy (did a clinic for our High School jazz bands, made a lifelong impression)
Rick Allen

I've been to a bunch of shows, its funny....many of them, the drummer doesn't stand out to me. Doesn't mean they were bad, in fact they were pretty much all great. I couldn't even tell you who the drummer was for many of them. Strange, when I started to think about all the shows I have seen since I was a kid.

Best I've ever seen live is Michael Walden with Warriors at the Keystone in Berkeley.

Also rans are:

Gadd with Al DeMeola.
Tony Williams.(his band)
Jack DeJonette.(his band)
Peer Erskine.(Weather Report/Steps Ahead)
Bill Bruford (David Torn)
Tris Imboden(Jeff Berlin)
Rayford Griffin (Ponty/Warriors)
Dave Weckl (Electrik Band)
Steve Smith (Warriors)

These are just the folks I've seen live with bands and not any clinics.

Man, some of you guys got to see Elvin, Buddy, Bonham, Blakey -- that's awesome.

Roughly in chronological order:
- Neil Peart
- Stewart Copeland
- Manu Katche (Peter Gabriel)
- Omar Hakim (Sting)
- Ed Shaughnessy (clinic and big band)
- Brian Blade (Black Dub, Joshua Redman, Chick Corea)
- Mark Guiliana (Donny McCaslin)
- Jack DeJohnette (Hudson)
- Dave Weckl (Chick Corea's Elektrik Band)
- Jojo Mayer (Nerve, clinic)

I'm a fortunate guy when I have to leave these guys out of the top ten!
- Vinnie Colaiuta (Sting)
- Max Weinberg (Bruce)
- Dave King (Bad Plus)
- Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello)
- Glenn Kotche (Wilco)
- Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam)

I came up through my gigging years in the by metal/pop punk era sooo...

I took my dad to see Level 42 when Gary Husband was still with them - phenomenal

I went to see a Zorro drum clinic which was great and Karl Brazil was supporting him who was also spectacular and unknown to me at the time.

Other than that, I don't know. Vinnie Paul is quite handy, Joey Jordison was impressive at the time.

My musical history is so poor I think I'd make the top ten 🤣

IHave seen a few great and very influential drummers but two that really made an impression,Jim Keltner with John Hiat,He had very fall down jerky jerky style visually, the first minute IWtached him it looked he was going to screw up at any moment, but I quickly realized why he is held in such high regard,he also seemed to hit the snare very softly on back eats, but was perfect. The other was Richie Heard with little feat, similar style and approach to Keltner, but very unique also.

Few more than 10 but good drummers deserve a nod of approval.

Carl Palmer
Steve Gadd
Dennis Chambers
Danny Carey
Tim Alexander
Gavin Harrison
Thomas Lang
Steve Gadd
Ian Paice
JR (Does meeting him count?)
Simon Phillips
Tommy Aldridge
Martin Axenrot
Neil Peart
Vinny Appice
Mike Portnoy

The old man was lucky enough to see Bonham and Baker in the 60s. The wife got to see Jim Keltner with Simon and Garfunkel in 2004 even though she doesn't know or appreciate it.

At Pro Drum, I met studio great Larry Bunker a long time ago. He was showing off his antique snare that had a lightbulb in it to keep the calf heads dry. I also set aside some sticks for Jim Keltner, and was very surprised when he actually came in to pick them up. Got a picture with Ndugu Chancellor. Got critiqued by Joey Heredia when I was in college, Gregg Bissonette judged my Guitar Center drum off solo years ago. Chester Thompson was really cool. David Garibaldi was the squarest guy I ever met, yet was so funky! Hung out with Bernard Purdie at the NAMM show while he signed his new book. Got to take pictures of Gavin Harrison at NAMM. Omar Hakim, Will Kennedy, Billy Cobham.....I'm blessed I got to meet all these people even if just to shake hands. Of course, Bermuda, who uses me as a sub, that's cool. I got to be in the Pearl room at NAMM during artists only hours and checked out stuff the same time Chad Smith was in there. There's a bunch of others, but those stick out.

I have seen way too many great drummers live in person to narrow it down to just ten. There were quite a few I saw perform from very close up in small venues though. These were extra special. Phil Collins, Bill Bruford, and Billy Cobham all in their prime between 1979 and 1981. Jeff Porcaro, Vinnie Colaiuta, Gary Husband, David Garibaldi, Terry Bozzio and Simon Phillips all at a small bar in Los Angeles. One guy I had never seen performing in person before but finally got the chance a few weeks ago was Justin Faulkner, and he was absolutely incredible.

I had to think long and hard about this, I am more impressed by the band as a unit and tend not to simply watch the drummer.
