Default Focusing on drumming as a profession. Dreaming to reality.

I love drumming like many of you folks and practicing daily with dedication and consistency. By the way I'm 9 to 6 kind of employee as a project management in a trading company. All my dream is to become a professional drummer someday(cliche!)
What's your suggestion as professional drummer ?

Start going to jam sessions. Get your "vocabulary" together in that you should be able to play convincingly any or all styles of music.

Granted, you'll probably end up in a specific niche of music but it's never a bad thing to know other styles and feels and idioms.

A lot of people who think they can jump from that of a "regular career" to being a "professional musician" are oftentimes taken off-guard at the level of ambiguity that comes with this trade. It's a very, no... extremely difficult way to get paid.

My recommendation- do it for the love of it. Play as much as you can, when you can. If you make a little bread then that's awesome. Invest it into your gear and get your working kit up to snuff.

But do NOT do like some guys I know and that's quit your lucrative day job with benefits and a pension for the allure of this because you'll end up sadly disappointed.

It is a sad reality that it is rare for anyone, not just musicians in general, or drummers in particular, to make a living doing what they love to do. Especially in America where the aspect of self-improvement, hard work, and seeking 'the dream' had a far more realistic degree of success than today.

"Professional drummer" is my answer to the question, "If money was no issue and you could do ANYTHING in the world, what would you do?" I've come to terms with the fact that it will only happen if I win the lottery or come into a bunch of money unexpectadly....ya right.

Today is more difficult than ever was because of Internet (almost noone buys CDs, Drum DVDs, Drum Books, get lessons with teachers, go to concerts to check out guys/learn from other musicians, etc), tons of non professional/amateur/etc playing for nothing, paying for playing, etc., ETC.

That, and it's very difficult for most of us in the U.S. to advise you how to do anything - let alone how to become a professional drummer - in Dubai. The basics do remain the same - become the BEST drummer you can possibly be. Lessons, study charts and learn to sight read as much as possible, practice, networking, practice, jamming, practice. Hang out with musicians and get your "vocabulary" (as stated above) as varied as possible. Those who make it don't do it by accident. Just like professional athletes and other professions that are very small, you have to be superb and have passion for it the overwhelms everything else. Start now and progress as much as you possibly can.
