Default an old but great article on Elvin

just rediscovered this article written by Adam Mansbach and it hit home

some here know that Elvin was very dear to me. He came into my life at a difficult time and helped me understand many things about life.
Losing him was tough .... and while reading this article I could almost smell cigarette smoke and cologne

including quotes like

"Sometimes watching Elvin was like watching Jacob wrestle the angel. Other times, it was like watching a man cradle his newborn child for the first time."

this is a great read ... check it out

Wow, that was moving.

I can only hope that my last days are filled with love and music. And I want a pair of f'n sticks in my coffin with me, or I'm going to be pissed!

Damn, Ants. I must have something in my eyes.

That's a really moving piece, extraordinarily well-written. Too often, obits are focused too much on the author, him/herself. Not this one; you can feel the pure love he has for Elvin and that's what the piece is all about.

You were very fortunate to know him the way you did, my man (I know you already know this). Truly one of the greatest artists ever to grace our planet.

absolutely guys

one of my favorite parts of the piece

- and how Elvin had responded to an eager student's question about the technical specifics of a 1969 recording date by leaning over the microphone and intoning the simple phrase, "You got to remember, music is all about love." -

it reminds me so much of every time I mentioned anything about my technique or if something was the "proper"way to do something..... every single time he said .. "forget all thats $hit man , and play music !"

...and yeah 8..... must have a little something in your eye brother ....eyelash maybe ?

Thanks for sharing that-- what an incredible privilege for those people to be present at those last gigs.

I flew out to catch the show on the 26th of April... I believe it was a Monday night ... the final show of the stand

I had not seen Elvin in about a year and he looked frail

it was hard to watch for me so after about 20 minutes into the set I went outside until it was over .... then went back in .

I didn't get much time with Elvin that night .... just a quick hello , how have you been , so great to see you .... he was in no condition for pleasantries.

I spoke to Keiko for a few minutes while Elvin laid down in the back then went back to my hotel.

as we hugged goodbye she said to me "he loves you."

thats all I needed

the Boss and I a few years before that night at the Knitting Factory in LA just minutes before demolishing about 10 pounds of steamed clams :)

i remember the first time i heard buddy play, i thought, "wow! i might be able to play like that someday!" and i would be energized. i remember the first time i heard dave weckl, i thought, "i could possibly play like that someday." same with vinnie, dennis chambers, keith carlock, etc. i also remember the first time i heard elvin. i'll never forget it. i remember thinking, sadly, "i will never, ever be able to play like that..."

Tony, you ever hear this disc?

Any thoughts? I love a few tracks on it, not so much others.

Great article Anthony. I remember reading about his funeral in one of the magazines and gathered it was both momentous and touching. Were you able to go?

That was an incredibly moving article. And I know Anthony, that you had a rare and beautiful connection to the man.

Cool article Tony. It's great that you had that kind of relationship with Elvin. Truly an amazing musician!

Great article, Tony. Something got in my eyes on that last paragraph.

You're a lucky man to have spent time with such a great man.

Great pic too!

Every terminal patient should, if able, to be let out of hospital to do what they love. That final drum solo ... damn those onions!
