Default Saw Steve Gadd last night

He's touring with James Taylor. They were in Phoenix.

Wow, great presence without over-powering the rest of the band. He just makes everything look so easy.

Of course JT's voice isn't the same as it was in his younger days, but it was a good show. I was entertained.

I am not sure if you refer to his 'strictly technical' playing with this..

But in my opinion that line should be applied for his musical thinking..There are lots of drummers that are able to play much more technical things than him nowadays, but regarding 'tasteful playing' and 'musical thinking' in my opinion he is still one of the best (if not the best) around..

I think i never heard him play one note with bad taste..

I agree.

There was a warm-up act with their own drummer, so I was able to A-B comparison - and there really wasn't any comparison. Don't get me wrong, the first drummer and the band in general (Sheryl Crow) was great. But, Gadd is just in a league of his own.

JT's music is pretty mellow to begin with, but Gadd played it well - not over powering, but still very interesting. "Taste" is a good choice of words.

I'm seeing James Taylor tomorrow night along with Bonnie Raitt at The Hollywood Bowl. Looking forward to seeing Steve Gadd play!

Is Bonnie Raitt back with the tour? She had some medical issues. Sheryl Crow was subbing.

I have a friend and fellow musician that worked with the local crew at that show. He was geeking out over Gadd's Yamaha kit, said Steve is playing an 18" bass drum for this tour.

I would love to watch Steve Gadd in action. He is one of the true monsters of tasteful drumming. I would think just watching him one night would be a master class that would stick with me forever. Problem is Id be calling out for him to play Rien Ne Va Plus all night and that probably wouldn't go over too well.

It was! NAMM for Yamaha is different - they take over the entire Marriott Hotel next to the convention center, so they’re not even in the main hall with everybody else - they have their own building!
