I wonder if Vinnie has left Vic Firth. He's been wiped from their website.

Lasted about as long as his Ludwig endorsement.

Vinnie is one of my favourite drummers, I don't think it can be overstated how how versatile he is and how good his chops are. I had always wanted to see him live and this year I saw the best concert I've ever seen in my life thus far, Jeff Beck with Vinnie on drums, it was like every Christmas and birthday at once! Has anybody else caught Jeff and Vinnie on this tour?

I've seen him live many times since the first time with Zappa.

I caught them one month ago in Vienne, France. That was the first time I saw Jeff Beck !

Great concert !

Well, it's difficult to know what to say without descending into being a babbling fanboy. Suffice to say, whatever expectations I had about Beck and Vinnie, they were met. Exceeded, even. Beck did things with his guitar that made me weep, and I;m not exaggerating. I have never done that at a concert before. It sounds cheesy, but the music really seems to touch something deep within you. And Vinnie was insane. I don't know the technical drum terminology for what he was doing, all I know is it was f*cking awesome. Fast, fluid, and fitted every song. One particular tune, Nadia, gave me goosebumps. It's an Indian flavoured piece written by Nitan Sawhney, where Beck makes his guitar sound like a sitar, just beautiful.

You are fully preaching to the choir my brother! I get it. Nadia was amazing on the Ronnie Scott dvd, I can only imagine live! The dvd made me declare.....this guy, this guy plays guitar like I want to hear it. And as Jeff Beck describes in his dvd interview, Vinnie rips and rolls and always hits the bulls eye on the target (referring to being on time, nailing transitions etc), just all that action and its dead on precise, to me he's on a whole other level than even the best guys out there. He does the impossible with style and grace and an elegance that makes it mind blowing. Vinnie has brought so much joy to my life I should send him a muffin basket or something. Im so glad you went and enjoy it the way I do.....awesome, thanks for sharing. If anything pops into your mind that you want to share, please do. I wont be at this show this weekend as Ill be at Phish fml.

I just made this, and got written permission from the composer/bass player to use his music. Enjoy :)

Colaiuta is a great drummer, a legend....but i wonder why, with all the young talented drummers available in the world (especially in the States) Herbie Hancock insists on calling him for his tours.

Perhaps because they are relative contemporaries Herbie trusts in his knowledge and familiarity with a multitude of past and contemporary styles, and has developed a comfort level working together. Colaiuta is a great drummer, a legend, imho is a huge under sell for Vinnie. To me, he can pull off just about any style, make it look easy, and execute on a mind boggling level. He's able rip and hot dog, express any and every musical idea in a way that makes me jump and shout, and then he can do his metric modulation and just make the hardest most complex music seem like a walk in the park. Few guys can legit jazz, pocket funk, slam rock, seal call drum solo, etc etc as proficiently as Vinnie....Id say very few. I gotta check out some of your Deantoni vids man, thanks for posting those and kicking off more Vinnie talk.

I completely understand your point, but then he brings a 40 years old keyboard and sax player like Terrace Martin on tour, the same guy who's producing his new album....i know the drummer has a pivotal role (especially live), but look at Stanley Clarke...he always brings young musicians with him on tour (from drummers like Ronald Bruner Jr. and Mike Mitchell to pianists like Beka Gochiashvili). I know Vinnie can pretty much play everything, but c'mon.....it's about time to let the young cats play.

I don't think it's a matter of "who fit that better", because Colaiuta is a master in what he does and is capable of everything, but at this point of his career Herbie should be more "mentally elastic".
I read somewhere a few days ago that for this small run of dates in South America this November he brought Justin Brown on drums, a crazy talented guy that certainly deserve such an important spot; hopefully he will be chosen again when Herbie will be on tour with the new album.

I def get that point of view and hear ya and agree on some levels. Sadly I also have a 25 year love affair with Vinnie so he can do no wrong for me. But sure, I would love to see Chris Dave, Mark Guillana, Dafnis Prieto, I can think of a bunch of guys that would absolutely dazzle me on the throne. But you would be hard pressed to find someone as well rounded and capable as Vinnie. Uch Im intolerable fan boi, please excuse lol.
