No more bad talk! Make a list of everything you are good at when it comes to playing the drums. Oh, and no self-depreciation disguised as a compliment (e.g. "I'm really good at hanging my head in shame as I walk off the stage," "I'm really good at dropping my sticks the the most important parts of songs," etc). This thread will not hear of it!

So, make a list of all of your strengths as a drummer! Also, I thought this might be a good resource for others too. So if you see someone that's good at something that you wish to improve upon, feel free to ask!

Ok, so here we go. I'll start.

Things I'm good at:

  • Playing with a click track
  • Recovering after I mess up
  • When playing 6/8 time, I'm really good at ghost notes on the snare drum.
  • My 20+ years of experience really shine when I play simple stuff. Although I'm not flashy, I've got a nice touch when playing drums.
  • I'm good at dynamics, and because I play other instruments as well, I'm good at listening while I'm playing. Playing a wide variety of music has taught me how to play dynamics well.
  • I have ALWAYS gotten along with the most difficult musicians, and I've never been asked to leave a band or group.
  • In the studio, I'm very much so a "Johnny-One-Take."
  • I'm pretty good at tuning drums now. It took a good 15 years to be able to.

Your turn!

Hmm...

Blast beats
Double bass
Anything fast
Fairly technical music
Recovering

Thats all my type of music really requires so it works.

Interesting thread! Cant wait to see what others put up. For me I'd like to think they're things I'm proud of not necessarily good at. That's up to others to tell me.

Things I take pride in:
- My ghost notes. (Triple and quadruple strokes with my left hand)
- Single pedal speed
-Tuning drums quickly. Tuned a drum instructors drum and she loved it!
-My body thumping grooves

Well, lets see

-I'm the best big band player on my school's campus
-Tuning
-Making use of what I have available
-Management: both time, and the other percussion sections of which I am the leader
-And I suppose I'm pretty well versed in just about every style and genre of music.

Double stroke/buzz rolls
Keeping time
Tuning
Best drummer on my street
Having fun...

Playing the drums. I leave it to others to decide what they like or what they dont like. Good? Who knows.

Do you find that you are counting this in your head as you play, or is there a certain "feel" you get to it and you don't have to count?

I never count in my head for anything I play. For odd time grooves, I come up with a bass line or pattern in my head and i just feel it, that is if I'm playing on my own. When it's with a band, it's easy to feel it, especially if you shut your brain off, stay in the moment and not think about what you're doing.

Well, it works for me.

I am great at:

Underestimating the involvement in composing, practicing, and playing a drum part for a song.

Nailing transition fills in the practice loop but flubbing them when recording.

Accidentally turning any accented snare hit into a rimshot.

Not getting hung up about the above, drinking a beer, and reflecting on how silly I am.

I can divide by zero.

Trust me, though, you don't want me to.
