coated on batter and reso? (anyone try this?)

Hey all,

I'm new to the forum. Just got myself a brand new Sonor S-Classix. I'm a Benny Greb fan and I love the warm sound he gets out of his kit. He said he gets this by putting Coated Emperors over Coated Ambassadors.

I was wondering if anyone has tried this with the big name drum heads. I don't play Remo (and don't want to since I've had too many problems with them in the past) and am a fan of either Evans or Aquarian. Both make great heads.

Has anyone tried Coated G2s over Coated G1s?

Or Coated Response 2 over Texture Coated 1ply?

If you have what results did you get? And what drums did you try them out on? For example, has anyone tried them on birch drums (since my kit is birch)?

Glad to be part of the forum and you can expect to see pics of my new Sonor and Byzance gear in the near future.

I'm currently using a Remo coated Emperor over a coated Ambassador on my 14x14 birch floor tom. It sounds very nice; the coating helps eliminate certain high-frequency overtones that are present in clear heads, while warming up the overall sound of the drum and ever-so-slightly rolling off the sustain. I've found that I don't need to muffle the drum at all to get a good sound, but if I want to fatten it up just a bit I'll use a piece of Moon Gel. Actually, lot of drummers used coated heads all around the kit in the old days, most notably Buddy Rich and John Bonham.

I started playing during the early seventies. I didn't buy a clear head until the late seventies.
Coated on both sides was the way we rolled.
We used to use an Ambassador or Diplomat on bottom and an Ambassador or Emperor on top. We would turn our rack toms over sometimes to get a different sound if we were using two different heads.

If you look at vintage drum catalogs, most all of the drums were marketed with coated heads on both sides.....
