Role of the Individual in a Band Context

Hey all, looking for some deep insight on the role of the individual in a band, maybe one a larger setting like an orchestra or a big band and in a smaller setting like a rock band or jazz combo.

I'm writing a paper in one of my lectures about this and I'd like to connect this to something music related.
