I'm pretty sure the song is "Get to It". Drumless version available at his website here: http://www.daveweckl.com/gettoit.htm

Yeah I completely share the same feeling as you! People like Thomas Lang, Grant Collins, even Mangini are more of chop builders than musicians to some extent when they are doing solos. And you can hardly just "listen" but have to watch.

I could watch and / or listen to Weckl play for hours without getting tired of it. There's so much more emotion, thought, and beauty going into what he does. It's music.

Nice to see this thread has gone full circle. I was a little puzzled by some of the originating posts that questioned Weckl's musicality.

While certainly on the busier side of things, there are very few who are the complete package like him i.e. sound, precision, ability to swing/groove, etc.

Multiplicity is an amazing album which really showcases his many strengths; highly recommended!

Completely agree on all counts (love that album), some of the newer vids available on YouTube show his progression to even greater depths - just amazing stuff, totally at ease while making amazing music. I could watch the guy play for hours.

Just watched the first drummer of the show, Greg Potter. *facepalm* . Weckl coming on now.

Yeah, Potter acted like a clown and played with too much force. I hope Weckl will do better.

No question of that, Weckl will kill it. Potter has obviously got skills but his whole showmanship thing is a bit tacky, almost cabaret. His timing wasn't great either, particularly when you're talking about this level of playing, trying to copy Buddy.

Whoah... he just started and it's already like day and night. Jeez... Force & cabaret vs. taste & feel.

Yep, exactly! Dave Weckl = real drummer :D

Edit: Great show! Dave played flawlessly with several mind blowing solos.

Weckl was fantastic wasn't he. Equal measure of classy and unreal in his set- which pretty much goes without saying.

Potter was good also, he didn't hold back that's for sure.

All in all a very entertaining 2 hours. Nice one to Ronnie Scott's for streaming it.

Potter is of course a good drummer, but he somehow did not fit with the band. Played to many solos, played too loud, he missed that "swing feel" quite often IMHO. Weckl has that "swing-feel". It was really night and day...

I was amused at Weckls comment of "I still try to figure out what Rich did on the drums". Hell, almost the whole drumming-world tries to figure out what Weckl does on drums. :-)

I agree with that.

I didn't really warm to Potter as it seemed to be a little too much about his drumming, even jokingly berating the band at times (although I guess in that there was a little part of him playing the part of Buddy more than anything) he still did well and I can see why he went for his approach completely.

Weckl played beautifully. Played for the music and sat back when needed. Great show of musicianship from him and you could really see the band react to his playing, lots of smiles from all the band members at times. Great to see the little things like that. Most drummers sharing a bill with him are going to have to take second spot.

Like you said a real night and day but a treat to witness all of it.

Here's the whole show for those who didn't get to see it. I've set the youtube timer where Weckl is introduced.

Holy Moly, I don't know who was more impressive. Weckl or Dey. Incredible bass-playing. If I show that vid to my bands bass-player, he will be severly depressed. :-D

Saw Weckl with Mike Stern yesterday. Mr. Kennedy got to stretch out a lot, though. He has the groove, too.
