Who are some better "Metal" drummers?

My friend keeps trying to show me "Post-Hardcore" drummers in trying to impress me, and aside from the speed and work around the drum set, none of it impresses me. Who would you say are some better guys, who are noteworthy and do things like play in odd meters, syncopate, maybe be ambidextrous, incorporate rudiments into their beats and fills, or something like that. It seems like mostly single stroke rolls and triplets with the double bass at high tempos.

Are there any noteworthy guys I can check out? The most recent suggestion was the drummer from August Burns Red... I assume someone is familiar with the genre and can help?

Danny Carey (Tool)
Sean Reinert (Cynic, Death)
Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta)
Brann Dailor (Mastodon)
Martin Lopez (Opeth)

Wow, that was fast. Are those bands similar to August Burns Red or Texas In July or A Day To Remember? I'm trying to remember other band names I've heard..

Sorry, I'm not familiar with any of those bands.

"Post Hardcore" and "Metal" are two different things, the former being bands like Fugazi and the latter being bands like Slayer...

Personally, if you want metal drummers, I'd go for the classics like:

Scott Travis (Judas Priest)
Igor Cavalera (Cavalera Conspiracy / Sepultura)
Roy Mayorga (Stone Sour / Soulfly)
Vinnie Paul Abbot (Pantera / Damageplan / Rebel Meets Rebel)
Dave Lombardo (Slayer)
Paul Bostaph (Forbidden / Slayer / Tetament)
Dave McClaine (Machine Head)

For hardcore (not post hardcore) bands I'd go for these:

Mackie (Cro-Mags on Age Of Quarrel)
Danny Schuler (Biohazard)
Sol Abruscato (Life Of Agony)

There's quite a few but the album that never ceases to amaze me is Symbolic by Death, Gene Hoglan on drums. The guy is phenomenal.

Other obvious ones are Derek Roddy, Flou Mounier, George Kollias, my personal favorite is Martin Lopez (Opeth)

Sal from LOA is pretty good.
Jason Bittner from Shadows Fall
Chris Adler- Lamb of God
Joey Jordison- Slipknot ( some say he's over rated some argue otherwise)
Mike Portnoy- Dream Theater
Derick Roddy
Thomas Lang

Just a few of the best I can think of off the top of my head right now.

I always forget Thomas Lang plays in a metal band. Monster drummer he is.

I feel I should put in a word for Martin Axenrot, who replaced Martin Lopez in Opeth. He's done some very interesting stuff.

For more straight-ahead stuff, Alex Holzwarth from Rhapsody of Fire is very impressive, he's like the Phil Rudd of power metal.

I don't really subscribe to all those various genre sub-classifications (wtf is post-hardcore? it's all either rock or metal). Increasing complexity while increasing in musicianship, it's generally metal. The other direction is rock (more riff, lyric and hook oriented).

That being said.. (I classify all these as metal)

Moe Carlson - Protest The Hero
Navene Koperweis - Animals As Leaders
Indukti - prog metal from Poland
Pat Skeffington - Scale The Summit

Surprising to see some drummers listed that some think are metal (I got the Meg White joke!).

I'm a complete raving fanboy of Tomas Haake. He is god and can do no wrong in my book.

That said, I don't care for too much metal. I'll have to check that fat (fluffy) guy, though. Seems a lot of people think he's pretty good.

It took eight posts before Portnoy was mentioned?

For shame, for shame.

Some of my favorite metal/posthardcore/whatever drummers-

Sam Applebaum - Veil of Maya
Navene Koperweis - Animals As Leaders
Travis Orbin - Periphery/Sky Eats Airplane
Moe Doodle - The DoodleBops

Mike Portnoy and Danny Carey are the first people I thought of.

Also....
Mike Wengren (from disturbed) does a lot of unique stuff behind the kit.
Shannon Leto (30 seconds to mars) is worth checking out.
Jason Bittner.... Chris Adler I guess... Not really the genre you're looking for though.

Shawn Drover (Megadeth)
Dave Lombardo (Slayer (Called the godfather of Double bass for a reason))
Shannon Lucas (All That Remains/Black Dahlia Murder)
Chris Pennie (The Dillinger Escape Plan/Coheed and Cambria)
Blake Richardson (Ex-Between the Buried and Me)
Danny Carey (Tool)
Alex Van Halen (Van Halen(Not really a metal drummer but he does some cool stuff with the double bass (See Hot For Teacher and I'm the One)))
George Kottias (Nile)
Dave McClaim (Machine Head)

And every other one that has been mentioned so far.

WHAT. When?
Also, for good (and true) post-hardcore drummers, check out guys like
Tony Hajjar - At The Drive-In, Sparta
Brandon Proff - Fear Before The March Of Flames
