Looks like he's using a coated batter, for the reso you could try a coated reso as well. Allot will depend on what his drums are made of and what yours are made from. I'm with fussion they sound a little boxy to me not much tone.
I dig it. I bet it rings more in that space than on the recording. But I have seen a lot of guys with those big toms tune the reso side up and bring the coated side way down. I tried it once on my 16x16 + it took me forever to get it to sound right. Sounds simple, but worked. Also used a Remo Vintage Coated head that sound cool. It did "deaden" the sound a bit though.
Love that crash cymbal though. Any idea what that is? Sounds glorious every time he hits it.
