Default Do you remember when...

Songs would spur a dance craze, or songs were written with the purpose of introducing a new dance?

I'm trying to think of the last song I can remember that had a dance attached to it. The most recent one I can think of is the Macarena.

There has to be more recent ones than that. Right??

I always thought it was a good idea, the dance/song combo. If you give the kids a new original dance, built around your original song...it's a good business move.

Heck, I'll write a song and invent a new dance. I'll call it "The Business Move".

So, this thread is all about songs that were written to introduce a new dance step, and anything else that's even remotely related.

The Twist by Chubby Checker. There may be some other slow, doom trance songs I don't know about that emulates my kid on a school morning.

I like the main step which is a paradiddle.

Madonna tried to get us to Vogue back in the 90's. In the 80's, Wham tried to get us to do the Jitterbug. The 70's had the Locomotion, but my favorite was the Boot Scooting Boogie.

The twist has the be ultimate. Easy for anyone, even with two left feet, and old Chubby got a lot of mileage and even a few albums out of it.

"Just Freak" in the 70's by the band Slave. "The Freak" was the dance craze. Also "Freak Out", I forget the band's name but it was a big disco thing....

When we travel, some of block party type of festivities include the Cupid Shuffle (2007), which always packs the floor. Gotta admit, if this doesn't move you, you must be dead. 8>)

My mind is blown. I never noticed that. My boy and all his classmates went crazy for that dance.

It's like the ending of The Usual Suspects or The Sixth Sense. Suddenly my boy's interest in drumming falls into place. I need to lie down and take stock.

I have no idea who did it, but "Shovelin' the Gravel" was a spoof on the song/dance idea.

No one has mentioned Wilson Pickett yet?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fa4BfPQiKs

Also, can't forget Ray Charles imploring us to shake a tailfeather...where there are several dances mentioned.

Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)

I absolutely detest this one. But I wouldn't discount the possibility that Grunter's Dad will point out that part of the dance is a Ratamacue and then my mind will be blown all over again...

Beat you to that one. I normally don't like that type of music but I appreciate that for it's good natured wholesome fun.

Just read an obituary for Bobby Freeman....it said that he was performing somewhere and they wanted him to do another song but he didn't have another, so he started to do dances, and so gets credit for starting various dance crazes, including The Swim.

How about songs that tried to start a dance move, and it just didn't go over very well

ZZ Top
Hey, look at the hooks
On your pants makes you want to dance.
I say yeah yeah,
I say yeah yeah.
There ain't never a catch, all you got to do is snatch,

This still happens quite a bit, as hip-hop has sort of taken over (the US at least) as the standard of pop music, most of the dances are based on hip-hop songs.

There was one a few years ago about a whip motion and something else that I forget. Just go on youtube, and you can see tons of teenagers performing the dances, and teaching the dance steps, along to the music on video.

Almost every hip-hop or pop song today also has some signature moves, where certain parts of the song require a certain dance move, but the rest is open to interpretation.

When I was in High School, the "Time Warp" from Rocky Horror Picture Show was what the coolest kids liked. I was never one of the cool kids.

"The Mess Around" by Ray Charles comes to mind, not sure if that was supposed to be a dance.

More recently, "The Wobble" I used to hear that one every time I went out.

Also "The Electric Slide", "YMCA", and any song from the 50's about Twisting.

I wrote one in my band in the same vein, a cheeky take on the dance songs of the 50's and 70's that's about dying in a nuclear explosion. We never did make a dance to go with it although I did notice that drunk people and children did the same little jump on the tempo change parts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkQX...MroGHyJbLya3c9

There is the twerk, of course, which took nearly 20 years for Miley Cyrus to make mainstream.

The first song to use the word was this, from 1993, which appears to be all about doing different dances...the Eddie Bauer, the pork chop, etc.
