Ebony w/Black Dot Underhead Snare Head

I just purchased a Remo Ebony 14 inch snare head with a black dot underside.

I put it on my snare, tuned it to my liking, and it

ABSOLUTELY

SUCKS.

It sounds literally like pounding on the underside of a tin trash can.

So, I put a piece of duct tape at the top to dampen the resonating metallic thud, and it worked like a charm.

Now, I was told the black dot underside was going to cure that problem, but apparently not. My question is: is duct tape an acceptable means to dampen sound on such a "great" batter head?

If it sounds good with the tape, then it worked.

It might not be pretty, but if it made the drum sound better, then you go with what works.

If you like the sound now, just use the head until it's time to change then get something else if it's not something you dig.

Is it the Ebony Suede with an underside dot (kind of dull black, smooth-ish finish)?

I've seen special ordered regular Ebony heads with a dot on top but not underneath.
Years ago, they used to offer the Ebony with a White dot too.

The Remo Ebony heads were 1st really designed for looks more than anything. In the big hair era of the 80's, they were popular just because it was visually cool.

They've always sounded less than great, and I'm surprised they still make them.
