Default Manly Grooves

There are a ton of great grooves out there in the music universe, but political correctness aside, secretly in our hearts all us drummers know there are grooves and then there are...GROOVES.

You know, the hairy-chested ones. Ones that separate the men from the men from the boyz.

Post up stuff you think is not jut good but freaky good.

Here's Will Kennedy laying down an insane one on '

I find this some awesome grooving:

Voicst - Everyday I work on the road

Joppe Molenaar from the Dutch band Voicst - I've seen them live and they are great! They know how to make a good show. Joppe is very charismatic on stage.

Aw yeah! Here's another one by the man, we all well recognize for it's thunderous explosions during the chorus and fills, in contrast to the calm during the verse:

Didn't mean to sound sexist, DC, though I have known girls with chest hair. SheilaE is a monster, no doubt.

I have a few female students, and let me tell you, they really rock. They are also a lot of pleasure to teach.

Here's an old one, but the drums are definitely MANLY.

It's like driving spikes with a sledghammer

Mick Tucker with The Sweet doing Cockroach.

Kinda Punk, kinda Metal, kinda Glam, WICKED 1970's and kinda kickin' ass!!

Erykah Badu's Live album. You wouldn't expect it but after listening to that album, you'll wake up the next morning with hair in places you never would have imagined.

I'm also loving the Felix Lehrmann stuff on DW.

Let's not forget the late great Bobby Chouinard, he was one of the kings of "manly" drumming. His "Bonhamesque" style with Billy Squire was quite noteworthy.

Billy Squier - Lonely Is The Night

It's one of those songs that you can play the NOTES, but getting that groove that Chouinard layed down is quite another matter.

ROCKIN' man!!!

My drum teacher says that he has seen an increase in female students so, apparently, drumming is becoming less and less a "male thing".

Some serious grooves here; couldn't find the section that has Whithers playing with a stick in his mouth. If you like this the DVD is available at the Gentle Giant web site http://www.blazemonger.com/GG. It is much better quality than this. Beautiful pink champagne Ludwig's and is it me; or his hi-hat over sized? I love this band, I have all of the vinyl including many British pressings and find that it is ageless music. Check it out if you are not familiar with the band.

Cheers,
