Default Lyrical gut punches

What are your favorites?

Two of mine:

Ohio, by CSNY:
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground?

Dogs, by Pink Floyd:
And in the end you'll pack up
Fly down south
Hide your head in the sand
Just another sad old man
All alone
And dying of cancer

I think I'm going to like this thread.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, by Gordon Lightfoot:

Does any one know where the love of God goes
When the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searches all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd put fifteen more miles behind her

Joan of Arc, by Leonard Cohen:

And who are you? she sternly spoke
To the one beneath the smoke.
Why, I am fire, he replied,
And I love your solitude, I love your pride.

I Let Love In, by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds:

So if you’re sitting all alone and hear a-knocking at your door
The air is full of promises, well buddy, you’ve been warned
Far worse to be Love’s lover than the lover that Love has scorned

I let love in

From "Up On Cripple Creek" by The Band: I know I can do better than this but this will do for now..

So I took up all of my winnings

And I gave my little Bessy half

And she tore it up and blew it in my face

Just for a laugh

Eagles: Lyin' eyes
"So she tells him she must go out for the evening
To comfort an old friend who's feelin' down
But he knows where she's goin' as she's leavin'
She is headed for the cheatin' side of town"

Oh yeah she's going down to comfort an old friend? What's his name Ole One-Eye? Poor boy must be feeling down but no worries she'll get em up in no time.

There are a few songs that have very cool turns of phrase that I like - they aren't necessarily the most rocking songs, but the lyrics just work really well.

From "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor:

Quote:
Been walking my mind to an easy time, my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around
Another really cool one is almost the entirety of Simon and Garfunkle's "The Boxer":

Quote:
I am just a poor boy though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles, such are promises
All lies and jest, still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest, hmmmm

When I left my home and my family, I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station, runnin' scared,
laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters, where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know

Asking only workman's wages, I come lookin' for a job
But I get no offers
Just a come-on from the whores on 7th Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there

In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down or cut him
'Til he cried out in his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving, but the fighter still remains

I've also thought that the lyrics from "Black Balloon" by the Goo Goo Dolls had some really awesome lines in them:

Quote:
Baby's black balloon makes her fly
I almost fell into that hole in your life
And you're not thinking about tomorrow
Cause you were the same as me
But on your knees

A thousand other boys could never reach you
How could I have been the one?
I saw the world spin beneath you
And scatter like ice from the spoon that was your womb

The Beatles,

I think I'm gonna be sad,
I think it's today, yeah.
The girl that's driving me mad
Is going away.
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care.
She said that living with me
Is bringing her down yeah.
For she would never be free
When I was around.
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care.
I don't know why she's ridin' so high,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me.
Before she gets to saying goodbye,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me.
I think I'm gonna' be sad,
I think it's today yeah.

Pearl Jam-Black:
I know some day you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star, in somebody else's sky
But why? Why? Why can't it be,
Why can't it be mine?

STP-Still Remains:
If you should die before me
Ask if you can bring a friend
Pick a flower, hold your breath and drift away.

And not gut punchers;

Metallica-For Whom the Bell Tolls
Take a look to the sky just before you die
It's the last time you will
(I wanna do this)

Pink Floyd-Time
Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
It's good to warm my bones beside the fire
(absolutely couldn't agree more)

Another Leonard Cohen....

Suzanne-

And Jesus was a sailor when he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching from his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain only drowning men could see him
He said all men shall be sailors then until the sea shall free them
But he himself was broken long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human, he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone....

On the way home from work last night "That Smell" by Lynyrd Skynyrd came on the radio, and I listened to the lyrics for the first time in ages. The chorus ends with "The smell of death surrounds you".

The song was written to address the rampant drug and alcohol abuse in the band, and three days after the album with that song was released was the infamous plane crash that killed a third of the band.

I broke the surface so I can breathe
I close my eyes so I can see
I tie my arms to be free
Have you ever been free?
She's not breathing
She's not moving
She's not coming back

Grunt, did you get 'Ticket to Ride' mixed up with:

'I used to be cruel to my woman
I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved
Man, I was mean but I'm changing my scene
And I'm doing the best that I can (ooh)
I admit it's getting better (Better)
A little better all the time (It can't get no worse)'

I don't see a gut punch in 'Ticket', maybe a flick on the nose.

Dylan of course:
"Mama take this badge from me
I can't use it anymore
It's getting dark too dark to see
Feels like I'm knockin' on heaven's door
Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door
Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door
Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door
Knock-knock-knockin' on heaven's door, eh yeah
Mama put my guns in the ground
I can't shoot them anymore
That cold black cloud is comin' down
Feels like I'm knockin' on heaven's door"

Green Day One of my Lies
“Why does my life have to be so small, and death is forever?
And does forever have a life to call it’s own?”

Since I was a teen this Green Day line has always stuck with me.

Also Type O Negative September Sun
“September sun
blowing golden hair.
Now keep in mind son,
she wasn’t ever there.”

Nice one ace.
Will have to listen to this, was in Cripple Creek last month- not for gambling.
My wife’s mom was down so we took her to gamble, I just did recreational things and explored the town.

Leonard Cohen-

"Chelsea Hotel #2"

I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel
you were famous, your heart was a legend.
You told me again you preferred handsome men
but for me you would make an exception.
And clenching your fist for the ones like us
who are oppressed by the figures of beauty,
you fixed yourself, you said, "Well never mind,
we are ugly but we have the music."

(To put this in context for those who didn't know, this was written about a "romantic encounter" with Janis Joplin. Hard and kind of tragic thinking of either Janis or Cohen being "ugly"...)

A delayed gut punch...

Timothy (The Buoys)

Trapped in a mine that had caved in
And everyone knows the only ones left
Were Joe and me and Tim
When they broke through to pull us free
The only ones left to tell the tale
Were Joe and me

Timothy, Timothy, where on earth did you go?
Timothy, Timothy, God why don't I know?

Hungry as hell no food to eat
And Joe said that he would sell his soul
For just a piece of meat
Water enough to drink for two
And Joe said to me, "I'll have a swig
And then there's some for you."

Timothy, Timothy, Joe was looking at you
Timothy, Timothy, God what did we do?

I must have blacked out just around then
'Cause the very next thing that I could see
Was the light of the day again
My stomach was full as it could be
And nobody ever got around
To finding Timothy

Timothy

From Kris Kristopherson's "Me and Bobby McGee" sung by Janis Joplin

But I'd trade all my tomorrows

For one single yesterday

To be holdin, Bobby's body, next to mine...

That always floored me.

She wandered through the garden fence-Procol Harum:
She wandered through the garden fence
And said, 'I've brought at great expense
A potion guaranteed to bring
Relief from all your suffering'
And though I said, 'You don't exist'
She grasped me firmly by the wrist
And threw me down upon my back
And strapped me to her torture rack

And, without further argument
I found my mind was also bent
Upon a course so devious
It only made my torment worse

Two suggestions:

Pink Floyd: Time

Tired of lying in the sunshine
Staying home to watch for rain
You are young and life is long
And there is time to kill today
And then one day you find
Ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run
You missed the starting gun

Pink Floyd: Us & Them

With
Without
And who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about?

Hawking by Todd Rundgren (about Stephen Hawking)

Whenever I
I close my eyes
Then I don't mind being the way I am
But whenever I try
Explaining why
I know I never can
Now that it's
Gone, paths I used to travel
Gone, things I used to handle
Gone, once I had a choice what to be
But then God kissed me
And I lost it when I fainted in His arms

Always had a bit of a reaction from this story song too.

---

Ode to Billie Joe

Bobbie Gentry

It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
I was out choppin' cotton, and my brother was balin' hay
And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat
And mama hollered out the back door, y'all, remember to wipe your feet
And then she said, I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge
Today, Billy Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

And papa said to mama, as he passed around the blackeyed peas
Well, Billy Joe never had a lick of sense; pass the biscuits, please
There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow
And mama said it was shame about Billy Joe, anyhow
Seems like nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge
And now Billy Joe MacAllister's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

And brother said he recollected when he, and Tom, and Billie Joe
Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show
And wasn't I talkin' to him after church last Sunday night?
I'll have another piece-a apple pie; you know, it don't seem right
I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge
And now ya tell me Billie Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge

And mama said to me, child, what's happened to your appetite?
I've been cookin' all morning, and you haven't touched a single bite
That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today
Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way
He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge
And she and Billy Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge

A year has come and gone since we heard the news 'bout Billy Joe
And brother married Becky Thompson; they bought a store in Tupelo
There was a virus going 'round; papa caught it, and he died last spring
And now mama doesn't seem to want to do much of anything
And me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge
And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge

Yeah, chills are also what I get when I hear (or just think of) this song. Lightfoot has a way of painting a visual picture with just a few lines, same as Leonard Cohen.

A couple other of artists who can also do that are Roger Waters and Bob Dylan

Joey, by Bob Dylan:

Born in Red Hook, Brooklyn, in the year of who knows when
Opened up his eyes to the tune of an accordion
Always on the outside of whatever side there was
When they asked him why it had to be that way
"Well, " he answered, "just because"

The police department hounded him, they called him Mr. Smith
They got him on conspiracy, they were never sure who with
"What time is it?" said the judge to Joey when they met
"Five to ten, " said Joey
The judge says, "That's exactly what you get"

One day they blew him down in a clam bar in New York
He could see it comin' through the door as he lifted up his fork
He pushed the table over to protect his family
Then he staggered out into the streets of Little Italy

Sister Jacqueline and Carmela and mother Mary all did weep
I heard his best friend Frankie say, "He ain't dead, he's just asleep"
Then I saw the old man's limousine head back towards the grave
I guess he had to say one last goodbye to the son that he could not save

One More Cup of Coffee, by Bob Dylan:

Your daddy, he's an outlaw
And a wanderer by trade
He'll teach you how to pick and choose
And how to throw the blade

He oversees his kingdom
So no stranger does intrude
His voice, it trembles as he calls out
For another plate of food

Who Needs Information, by Roger Waters:

Me and Benny went out last night looking for fun
Sipping ale in the moonlight
Waiting for the dawn to come
Benny pointed at a HiFi shop
He said, hey man, look at all the stuff they've got
How'd you make a have out of a have not

Benny climbed up on a footbridge
And he teetered on the parapet
He said can you see the whites of their headlights
Are they coming yet

The Tide is Turning, by Roger Waters:

I used to think the world was flat
Rarely threw my hat into the crowd
I felt I had used up my quota of yearning

I used to look in on my children at night
Asleep in the glow of their Donald Duck light
And frighten myself with the thought of my little ones burning

Satellite buzzing through the endless night
Exclusive to moonshots and world title fights
Jesus Christ imagine what it must be earning

Now the satellite's confused
'Cause on Saturday night
The airwaves were full of compassion and light

And his silicon heart warmed
To the sight of a billion candles burning

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Stones' Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker):

A ten year old girl on a street corner
Sticking needles in her arm
She died in the dirt of an alleyway
Her mother said she had no chance, no chance!

Buffy Sainte-Marie style gut-punch...

My country 'tis of thy people you're dying

Hear how the bargain was made for the West
With her shivering children in zero degrees
Blankets for your land, so the treaties attest
Oh well, blankets for land is a bargain indeed

And the blankets were those Uncle Sam had collected
From smallpox-diseased dying soldiers that day
And the tribes were wiped out and the history books censored
A hundred years of your statesmen have felt
It's better this way
