small drums or e drums

i'm looking at low end e drums like dm6 or dtx 400 or pearl rythm traveler. the dm6 and the rt are very close in price with the dtx being a little more.
i think i can see the appeal and the limitations of both. i want something that will be fun and inspire me to play but also a bonus would be if my kids could get interested.
i need small, quiet, inexpensive but with potential for actually playing with other people.
on one hand the rt seems like a proper kit and is open to a little tinkering but with the mesh heads no proper drum sounds. kids like noises.
low end e drums have several drawbacks like no choking, moody electronics, no upgrades at least on the cheaper sets. so what does anyone think ?
i'm sure you had these discussions before but what the hell, lets bash it out one more time. and just so you know, where i live options are seriously limited and prices jacked up.
ok that's all...

IMO, the ideal compromise is to get a small acoustic kit and convert it so you can play it either way - acoustic or electronic. You'll need a module too.

Hi Wildbill,
This is the first time I've heard that you can convert acoustic to electric. That's neat! How is it done... triggers? And what is the sound like when they're used as electric?

When using acoustic drums that have been converted to electronic, they will produce the sounds of whatever module you're using.
There's too much to go into here, but this forum has a section for electronic stuff. http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=28
V-drum forum DIY section also has a lot of good info. http://vdrums.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?48-DIY
You can also do a search to start learning about the process:
