Default The ulitmate cymbal placement

Scouring through Youtube I ran across this video, which made me realize I have been setting my cymbals up wrong all these years...

Wow...I'll never get those 10 seconds back.I don't know what was worse, the cymbal set up or the band.I guess you can't convince some people to accept substance over style.......or whatever that was.

What a dickhead!

"Cymbal angles" thread anyone? :)

That video would have been complete if it featured a picture in picture of his base drum petal technique, lol.

Geez, talk about an uncomfortable kit, not only the cymbals are at a ridiculous height, but the snare and toms are not much better, except for the bass drum and the hi-hat, this kit is a perfect recipe for bad posture and destroying your back, phew, that's pretty bad, this guy's gonna have trouble if he keeps playing like that.

The key about drum placement is to eliminate all source of tension, it's also crucial not to raise your arms above shoulder's height, as this will inevitably leads to shoulder and back pain, we have a world champion of what you shouldn't do as far as setting up your kit.

I could use this vid in my thread about back pain, as a perfect example of what you shouldn't do when setting up your kit.

... just watching this guy play, I feel the pain, lol.

@Andy: Flower power :)

Well, if you had trouble with rushing into the "1" at the end of a fill, that might be one way to cure it.

Sorry, that's the best I could come up with...

After all of the blood runs out of your arms after 2 songs, then what.

This cymbal setup is soooo... plain stupid. Is that drummer serious? He didn't have a teacher, did he??

... you turn the whole thing upside down, it looks cool, part of the stage show... and at the end of the gig you call an ambulance to evacuate the drummer :)

When you are trying to be cool, common sense is shut out of the equation. The toms are also too dang high.

I just noticed that his snare seems to be insanely tall as well. That has to be one of the most uncomfortable setups I've seen outside Craigslist.

He should buy Col Hatchman's hihat stand to complete his kit:

if the song grooved and everything sounded good, I would be all like, "well, it's a showmanship angle". But not so much. Whatever possessed him? Just because you can... doesn't mean you should.

What about this setup...

... the side view

... and the drummer's view :)

... just amazing, think in terms of setting up and taking down such a kit, you need a whole week :)

That's pretty nuts, if he went any higher he'd have to attach his sticks to his wrists with bungee cords and throw them. Of course, that may be really awesome.

How does he plan on hitting that little gong? Running around the kit, hitting, it and running back?

Has anyone noticed the "Jesus, The Solution" all over that kit?? Whatever happened to the whole humility, give up your worldly possessions for Christ, not being tempted by greed, extravagance, and excess, etc, theme in Christianity?

This guy didn't get the message I suppose....... or he's referring to a different Jesus.

Nah.. Its "The Jesus"... There's one of those fish thingies on that top gong drum.

Maybe the guy in the OP is a big John Stanier fan (Helmet, Battles).

Wow, I guess now I know where Tarjei StrÝm (Datarock, Lars Vaular) got the inspiration for his cymbal setup:

Obviously those drummers need to get Derek Roddy's new DVD (comes out in a few months) on ergonomic drum setup, haha.

BTW, Derek has just created a thread on that DVD:
