Default How can I develop SMOOTHness?

I've been recording myself lately and have found that my playing isn't smooth all of the time and is rather choppy.

I've been playing for 3 1/2 years now. I'm in an advanced youth big band in Portland, Oregon and have been told that I'm an awesome player.

I know how and what to play in different situations, I know all my genres, I transcribe, and practice 3-4 hours a day.

I need to know how I can develop a smooth feel on the drum set. I'm starting to become frustrated with my playing. Perhaps it will develop over time.

Any advice would be very helpful. Thank you!

Choppy as in altering your tempo a lot, or choppy as in the patterns you are playing are not sounding even?

My time is pretty good, it's just that certain phrases or transitions can be bumpy. Or everything will be in time but I may have to compensate for being late in a certain phrase. Micro things. Kind of like ripples in my time.

That makes me think it is a timing issue.

Okay. first off, the underlined phrase is confusing. If everything is in time, how can you be behind it?

Anyways, if it is just trouble with transitions, I would practice those specific spots. Do things such as practicing each limp/drum separately. If this is so minute that is not noticeable by the audience, I would still work on it, but after you work on other problem areas.

Smoothness is best achieved by eating plenty of fibers..

practice with a metrenome...that said, practice with the "bibles" like "Stick Control" and "Buddy Rich's Snare Drum Rudiments". the variation of sticking combinations with a solid meter will result in strength and the "smoothness" will come in time.

I think I was struggling with a similar thing. As soon as I started to record myself, I realized that my playing wasn't as precise as I thought it was. So I started playing to a click and it has helped a lot. The best thing to do (something which I'm still a little inconsistent with) is playing to a real slow click, like 40bpm or something... If you can master it, it will help you massively when playing at more normal speeds.

Micro timing issues it seems like. The teachers will tell what to focus on technique- wise, but I'd say just tons of sheer playing. Hrs & Hrs under your belt will do it.

First step is to think smooth, whatever your definition of smooth is...
Then your technique dictates how well you can recreate what's in your head.

I know that for me, (while practicing) if I get a new idea then try and play it, I usually have to play it many times before it starts sounding like the idea I had in my head. Even if I play all the notes in the right places, I still have to work hard on getting it to sound like the part I hear in my head, by playing with the dynamics, touch, accents, pulse and anything else that bears on the end result. Then I usually end up forgetting it. I've forgotten so many cool grooves I've worked on, but I'm confident that they are in "storage" and if I feel it again, it will be there to use.

Think of each beat as a baseball bat. Then look for the 'sweet spot' on each one.

Playing smooth just comes with time and experience. When you are playing, try not to over think what you are doing. Instead, feel it. You will surprise yourself and how different you play.
