Default DVD - Jeff Beck Live at Ronnie Scotts - WOW

I recently purchased the DVD "Jeff Beck Live at Ronnie Scotts"( I had to wait about 6weeks for it to arrive) and I must say, what a band of superstars. The dvd is about 2 and 1/2 hours long with 22 tracks of amazing musicianship. Vinnie Colaiuta, what can I say, breathtaking. I was fortunate enough to see this band perform most of what is on the dvd at a concert a few months ago in my home town.
This is a must have dvd for any guitarist/drummer/bass or keyboard player.

Does this set have his young female bassist, Tal, playing with him? She can't be getting paid because she is having too much fun. What a great player to be so young.

I got to see both of those shows last year and they were both fantastic. Actually, Tal was why I went. :)

the specific ones on the DVD; but the tours, duh. It was actually the first time I saw Jeff Beck or RTF.

Lenny White is probably the most underrated drummer around. As innovative as any in the land of drumming. I am lucky that I can get to see him frequently here in the NY clubs.

So how old is Tal... I've heard everything from 71/2 to a 35 year old.

Ah, a lot older than she looks... lot of the child prodigy talk seems ill informed.

I bought the CD last year and saw the DVD on Palladia the other night.

I'm wondering, does the DVD offer alternate camera views? I was disappointed there were no shots from behind Vinnie's kit and from the front, much of what he plays (visually) is obscured by his drums.

Still, very cool! Fun to hear Vinnie's take on "Stratus."

I agree, poorly filmed from a drummer's perspective, and I thought it was almost insulting how the keyboard player was left in the dark all night. Being a drummer, I know what that feels like.

But the music was awesome and inspiring.

Hehe, those strange moments...I just discovered today that my dad purchased this DVD. I didn`t have the chance to watch it yet but I`m excited, especially after reading these great comments.
Whew, moreover, it`s Vinnie...Vinnie. And Tal! What a drummer-bass player combo!

...

Finally saw it!

Jeff Beck was Jeff Beck, the amazing stylist who's playing demands attention to every little note, squeak, and howl that emanates from his Strat.

It was very neat to see him in the intimate jazzy setting of Ronnie Scotts. The audience looked a little out of place at first ( piano trio- like crowd, I thought ) for a howling electric guitar, and an explosive Vinnie Colauita in their face, but they lapped it up from the 1st tune out.

As Spleen said, It was great for me too, to see him play Stratus and Porkie Pie Hat , because these were 2 tunes our band used to cover eons ago. 'Because we've ended as lovers' and ' A day in the life' were magical, and it was wild to see Vinnie jump all over Led Boots..

Vinnie has a way of orchestrating so much of the tune on the drums, that one almost forgets Tal's understated 'Jaco- esque' playing. Very mature very solid. Would have also been great to have seen Jan hammer play with this lot, but Jason Rebello was no slouch either ( this jazzer from Sting's band has some serious chops too.. )

Jimmy Page was in the audience ( as was Robert Plant ) and Jeff didnt know that till the very end, which was interesting to note. Their brief exchange was full of historic poignance.

The bits with Clapton and the crooners guesting in on the gig were the only downer from me, though not too much considering Vinnie & the band were backing them still.

The interviews with Jeff and Vinnie ( and others ) are really eye opening too.

All in all - terrifc! Its a keeper.

Abe, great to "see" you man! Hope all is well.

I like your observation about Vinnie's "orchestrations." Seems a very apt description of his playing in this context.

Again, I just wish I could have gotten some better views of the master in action--there were so many "sweaty face close-ups" of Vinnie I began to wonder if the director also directs a lot of porn. ;-)

best,

spleen

Hey, bud, you are all too infrequent around here thesedays. Hope all goes well with you too.

Was watching the MD fest 2008 the other day and both Gavin Harrison, and Simon were talking about how as kids, they would be allowed to pull up a chair and sit right next to some great BBC sessions drummers while they recorded live in the studios.

Now I'd love it if VC ever let me do that..sigh

What about the moments where Vinnie is thrashing around on the drums and has time to push his glasses up, without missing a beat? The guy is a maniac.

Lol.. that was a moment there wasn't it...

...it reminded me of a drum- off once with Dennis Chambers and another drummer who shall remain unnamed to protect his self respect, but he was doing this call- response thing with DC at a clinic and challenged DC to answer a mother-of-all-monster fill...

... so DC kinda looks at him and leans on one of his floor toms, yawns and pulls the exact same fill.....one handed.

What do these drummers have for breakfast is what I want to know.
