Default What type of heads do you like with die cast hoops?

I know the hoops control the sound more so than 2.3mm hoops do. Do you prefer a different type of head to compensate?

Good question. I have an Oriollo aluminum Phantom snare on order (I ordered without hoops or heads) and have ben debating on what hoops to buy die cast or triple flanged, and then what heads. I'll be looking at these responses for ideas.

Evans Genera coated batter or Remo Ambassador m.5.

They complement the DC rims with just enough overtones for a musical sound.

This does vary with shell material though.

Good question! Consider that concert snares use Die Cast almost exclusively. Those snares usually have Diplomat weight heads, coated or Renn. type. The reason is to control overtones and yet have great sensitivity and response. I would still consider Diplomat or Ambassador weight single ply heads for tone and overtone control. If you want to graduate to Emp type heads, keep the 2.3mm.

I just put a Gibraltar wood hoop on the top side of my Black Beauty, and I really like it. Itís definitely more open and ringy than the die-cast I replaced it with, but the real payoff is the rimshot and rim click sounds. Theyíre just awesome. Iím seriously considering going to wood hoops for the batter side on all my snares.

Iím currently having good luck with clear or costed Ambassadors over clear Ambassadors. I want livelier heads because die casts tend to control and focus a thin shell.

I switched my stock Ludwig birch snare drum to old Grestch die cast hoops. I think the hoops are perfect for any 11 mil single-ply head. It took away just enough of the unwanted overtone that annoys me. I'm using an Attack Medium coated batter currently, but an Ambassador or G1 would work just as well. I'm still using a stock 3 mil reso, but I also switched out the wires to Puresound 20's.

You might want to consider the S-Hoops as well. They're a good compromise between die cast and the 2,3 hoops. I've also had good luck with the "302" hoops that Gretsch is shipping drums with. They're 3 mm with a "stick chopper" top edge. They do a great job on my brass Gretsch COB.
