Default Double Snare Day

A week ago I ordered a Mapex MPX maple snare, 8 x 14. and that came today, yay. The black is a stain showing the grain. So I drive to the Ma and Pa store near by to get some real heads for it. I walk into the drum section and notice on the floor some snares that I have never seen before, on clearance. One is the Gretsch RetroLuxe 6.5 x 14, that I have been eyeballing since Gretsch introduced them. They are all over the net for 249.00 and this was marked 149.00 and I commented to the manager that I really liked the drum, especially the looks, and he said he would make me a deal. I said I was listening, so he said $130. I said sold. I go to pay and their credit card machine in down thanks to the local power company cutting something. So tomorrow I will pick up the heads and the Gretsch. Sometimes the news is good.

The last photo is the real deal.

That Gretsch snare is pretty cool - a real art deco look to it.
Haven't tried one yet to hear how it sounds though.

That Mapex is way deeper than the stock photo - looks good.
I bet it's got tons of body. Is it sounding like you thought it would?

It looks so much better with the visible grain and the new badge. Love the dwretsch too.

I have had my eye on the Dwretsch snare since they came out and almost bought one from eBay last week but waited. Then this one showed up.

That MPX really looks sweet! Love almost anything Mapex. I Also had my eye on those Gretsch retro-luxe snares, been waiting for the price drop. Then I played one in a local drum shop. Hated it. Just not for me. Congrats on double name day though.

I've never even seen the Retroluxe before. Really bitchin look. It's like that drum had your name on it John. With a badge that would make even Sticks4Drums proud. Could be one of the coolest badges. People will buy it just for the badge it's that good. Gretsch knows what they are doing. Plus it's pre DW too. A steal.

The 8 x 14 looks like a great ballad snare for stadium rock. What a beast. I'd really like to hear that tuned both low and big and also cranked Stewart Copeland tight.

How do the RetroLuxe differ from their 130th Anniversary Renown brothers, aside from the triple-flanged versus casted hoops?

Well the Gretsch sounds great. The Mapex is packed back in its original carton on its way back. I was having real trouble getting rid of the snare buzz and then noticed it had no snare beds cut in the shell. A new one will be shipped tomorrow and this one goes back tomorrow. CascioInterstate was great with the return. Emailed a return UPS label and off she goes. when I get the new one I will do a sound byte of both.

I got my 8" Mapex from Casio also and it is buzzing some.. didn't think to check the beds.. let me know how you make out.. I actually love the sound of mine though very nice and deep tuned mid-high with Genera dry on it, did yours have the vertical grain on the inside ply?

I just checked and I do not see any beds.. no difference in shell at all, all the way around. My shell appears to have seams about every 8" on the interior ply which is vertical.. I say appear to, because I'm not 100% sure, when you look down from bottom edge (looking for beds) I do not see seams on bearing edges on the inside ply? I do love the sound though, best sound you can get for $99.

I emailed Mapex to find out what the deal is. I can't believe they would introduce a new line of drums, even low line, with no snare beds.

Mapex USA announces the release of it's new MPX line of snare drums. MPX snares were introduced to complement the Mapex Black Panther Series of premium snare drums.

I read this but I guess it means new group of snares in the MPX line. Thanks

I see them on eBay from time to time. Gretsch appears to do this every so often. Probably the neatest one I saw was the Renown 57' series. From what I can tell, they're all a Renown with fancy dressing (which is pretty awesome still).

My guess would be that your new snare is fairly similar, but with the flanged hoops.

Update. I have learned from the Mapex rep at Cascio the snare beds on these drums are only 1-2mm deep but are wide taper to accommodate wider snares. I have a new 8 inch snare coming tomorrow with snare beds of 3-4 mm. Mapex and Cascio are both to be commended for their service.

When I checked mine I didn't take the bottom head off so didn't see them. I do get more buzz then on any of my other snares but I really love the sound of the drum. It is amazing for the price.
