Default Auditioned a new vocalist = happy :)

Over the years, I've had my biggest variation of experiences when auditioning lead singers compared to any other band member. This time round was no exception, but for a change, it was a real pleasure.

1st up, the whole process from deciding to change (after 6 years with our (now) previous singer, through putting a call out, to accepting a new one, was only 1 week. Unexpectedly for our part of the world, we received a load of applications, & a good few of them were really good experienced ones too.

We whittled it down to two to audition, & our new guy just blew us away. Sang 10 straight songs with only 2 days notice, most he had never sung before, lyrics from an iPad.

Here's a little clip taken on my Zoom Q8 camera. This was the first song, & he got the job when he delivered 0:36 - 0:40 on this clip :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Khd0...ature=youtu.be

Guys, those of you who chime in on our social media, we're keeping this under the radar for now.

Glad you had good experience. New singer sounds great. I also watched some of your other gig video clips. Love your playing style - so very musical, dynamic, tasteful and commanding. Cheers, Dan

He sounds fantastic...and he was probably nervous with it being an audition and all. He will probably be even better in a more relaxed situation. Very impressive.

BTW those drums sounded decent, are those PDP?

Merry Christmas!

Wow Dan, just wow. I'm humbled by your kind words. Thank you :)

He absolutely was nervous, as was I. I'm always apprehensive when auditioning someone, almost as much as I would naturally be if I was the one being auditioned. I'm really excited to see what he can do once he's settled & knows the material.

I'll move swiftly past the intentional PDP "faux pas", & wish you a merry Christmas too ;)

He sounds good Andy. I think the drummer singer connection is huge in a band, so you need somebody who can really gel with your rhythm. Congrats man! BTW, That snare.!!

Agreed - timing as important as any other band member, maybe more so.

Yes, that's always the worry. He seems keen though, & a good personality fit on first meeting. Time will tell.

I'll have to keep it in mind. Great sound to it. I need to hear more of that and compare it to the Padauk.

I do enjoy when you post clips of you and your boys playing, KIS. Your band sounds great, and your drumming always sounds world-class.

Singer fits in very well, which is probably the best compliment I can give him.

Good vocalist and a good fit! I like his voice better than the previous singer. I always felt he was the weakest link in the band.

Previous vocalist now replaced - personal issues. He's a firm friend, so this is a difficult time for us, & we're trying to handle it as sensitively as possible. Nothing's going out on social media for a while yet.

Thank you for your kind words, although most who know me would piss themselves laughing at attaching "world class" to anything I play :)

We were curtailed by the previous vocalist's overall ability (as are all bands to some degree). The new guy is right where we need him to be, & we're excited by the opportunity. Honestly, I didn't think we'd get the strength of applicants we did.

I prefer padauk, but that's just me. Both are highly characterful.

Its funny because I agree that the talent gap between people who will respond to a singer wanted advert is larger than any other instrument. However, I have been told by others that the difference in drummers is actually bigger. Glad to hear you have found the right guy. We have been looking for a singer for months, but being an original band with a very specific style, it has been a difficult road.

Nice playing, Andy, and yes; experiencing a great audition is a very
inspiring thing. I guess you're even more fired up now :) :)!

I own a Guru tigerwood and a couple padauk snares and like Andy, I prefer the padauk, though the tigerwood holds its own. The padauks are as good as drums can sound IMO.

Congrats on finding a great singer--always the hardest to find.

He sounds good but you have to test him in front of a live audience.

Agreed - the most important test of all, but I'm very confident. He's toured Europe extensively on major show support slots (always a good grounding being the warm up act) plus his own entertainment tours.

He sent us a few clips, including audience shots with young ladies behaving "as they shouldn't" - nailed that concern for me ;)

Historically always the difficult role to fill, but on this occasion, we genuinely had strong choices available (probably the first time ever TBH).

A very difficult road, & I feel for you on that :(

Very much so, the re-invigoration was much needed.

Not at a gig, but they're great at rehearsal.
