Default Getting ready to hang with Carmine Appice

Hey DW brethren.

My father is an entertainer (Tommy James) whom is performing this Tuesday in NJ, and I just learned yesterday via email CC that one of the guests / backstage friends will be Carmine Appice. Holy cow! So we passed a few emails and what a nice guy. Never met him before, but to have a chance to spend an evening hanging out with a legend has me quite enthused.

I'm more into getting to know someone's personality than to barrage them with career and technical questions. But I thought I'd chime in here to see if I could ask him anything on your behalf. He did email me a new track he has coming out soon and it's very good. Can't wait to pick up the new album when it's out.

Cheers,
Brian

You suck....I'm envious :) You are very fortunate Brian.

Ask him if he remembers me from his Vanilla Fudge show in Phoenix.

I was the wannabe hippe kid with the afro who was probably a little high.

If I were to meet him, I'd be soooo tempted to make the mistake of asking him, "What is Jeff Beck like?" lol :)

Beck has been my favorite since high school and that's the only reason I knew of Carmine.

Oh...wait. I do have a question. How do you pronounce his last name? I remember from a live album decades ago, the announcer pronounced it app-a-see but I've heard it pronounced differently. Never mind.....Google knows everything.

Spent some time with Carmine last night and wow, what an incredibly nice person he is. Very approachable and you just feel relaxed. He's into cars and real estate, loves talking drums and any aspect of making music. He sat behind me in the 2'nd row and a few times he tapped me on the shoulder to ask about this or that. His girlfriend is lovely, and it was a pleasure getting to learn a little about him on a personal level. He has a book coming out May 2'nd called "Stick It!" Can't wait.

Unrelated but thought I'd share a surprising personal highlight of the evening. Yesterday was the 1 "monthiversary" of my new wife and I. The MC of the concert announced two "very special guests", and asked us to stand up while the spotlight moved to Patty and me. Wow! I got to kiss my awesome wife in front of eleven thousand cheering people. One of those serendipitous moments I'll remember fondly all my life.

Wow Brian, your Pop is Tommy James? Day-am!

I loved his hits. Sorry but no one can top the original "Mony Mony". "Crimson and Clover"...how I love that song. "Crystal Blue Persuasion"....another great song. What a great mood he captured. My childhood would have been much poorer without those songs. Thank your Dad from the bottom of my heart for me please.

I got so much enjoyment from your Pops music. I remember walking at least 4 miles (one way!) along a busy road (at age 9!) to get the "Crimson and Clover" 45 from a Department store in 1968. I can still picture the orange label. Back then, they used to play the record for you to make sure it wasn't scratched before you bought it lol. Great memories. Holy crap I was hooked hard on music even then. The Shondells had a lot of songs. I had a double CD with about 40 songs I got in the 90's.

But yea Carmine. Cool beans man.

Heck with Carmine, "The" Tommy James is your father? His tunes were some of the greatest of the late 60s. Catchy as hell. And when will they put him and the Shondells in the Rock HOF? Jeez they put in Joan Jett this year who had two hit songs, one of which was your father's....

Long live the Shondells!

ps Coincidence, this 45 is on my turntable now...no kidding.

Mony Mony is in my all time top twenty songs.

Billy Idol certainly did it justice when he brought it back to life and it made me appreciate the original version even more than I did in 68.

Great artist, great song, good times!!

Wow, you guys rock! Here I am talking about Carmine and dad's the center of conversation. Didn't mean it that way, but that will make him feel good. I'll pass it along.

I remember hearing an interview about how the title MONY MONY came about. Anyway, loved your Dad's music and very cool experience with Carmen. You are royalty dude!

So Russ, tell us the story!

Funny Brian how you are pumped to hang with a legend when you were raised by one.

My recollection is that they had this great hook and they were trying to turn it into a song. They may have been in New York but they saw the MONY insurance company sign and it clicked with the hook for them!

Russ is right. Mony stands for Mutual Of New York. I remember seeing the sign atop the building from the balcony as a 4-year old. MONY all in lights. It's true. It's like one of those AC/DC moments where you just need something to shout to complete a song that truly rocks. Doesn't have to make sense. Imagine if we'd been looking to the left at Howard Johnsons. Can't imagine it'd have the same ring.

Yes, and I said "Seriously, Why?" because now I will forever hear that in place of the actual lyrics. Damn you! (but it's still funny)

Hanging with Carmine Appice...VERY cool!

But, your dad is Tommy James?!?!???

Crystal Blue Persuasion. Since reading this thread, I cannot get that song out of my head. And I mean that in a very, very, very GOOD way! Yes, please pass along "the love" to your dad!
