Default Creating Music from NOTHING...one of my new favourite things to do!

Hey guys

My name is Ernest and I'm addicted to drumming!

I started about 2 months ago and after just 6 lessons I'm now doing rolls, flams, a few diddles learnt a teeny bit of independence and I'm loving it!

In my last lesson my instructor put on an old favourite song of mine. Lives Turn My Head.

We played along and I felt an amazing feeling...the feeling of being a musician.

I played the trumpet and piano for many years at weddings, large ochestras, school and church but I always felt inadequate...I played music, but was never MAKING music. I was never a musician.

Now that I'm playing the drums, for the first time, after 13 years of collective musical training and even though I'm at kindergarten level when it comes to drumming,

I feel like a musician.

Yeah man! Every lesson my mind gets blown! its just SOOO much more fun than practising the piano with my Dad looking over my shoulder :)

I sit with my practice pad like I'm sitting at a PS3! :)

So, I take it playing the drums feels this good for most people that enjoy playing?

Well, I'm 43 and I've been playing since I was 12. I never put them down just for that reason alone...they're so much fun to play. I also play guitar a little, but the drums I'm more passionate about. Never pursued it as a career, but I can't think of a better hobby than playing drums in a rock n roll band. Plus, it's very therapeutic and good for the soul. Have fun!!

I have been playing toy drums since my childhood, I had the habit of hammering my table with sticks and to create different sounds Until I receive my drum set when I was a teenager.

Wonderful!!

Many new drummers get caught up in being a technician...far more than new players of other instruments (so it seems).

It usually comes around but it creates a lop-sided-ness that takes time to balance.

Getting caught up in being a musician is the trap you want sprung on yourself!!

Hope you keep us informed about how things go....

Thanks guys!

Yeah Otto, I'm not sure what you mean technician, but I'm assuming you mean the technicalities of playing?

I really enjoy the theory and notation too, but as i told my instructor, I don't wanna be the next drummer for Pantera, I just wanna play along to my favourite songs when I feel like it...

playing on the cars dashboard and steering wheel just isn't the same! :)
