Wing nut sizes

I lost a wing nut for one of my cymbal stands and I know there's 6mm and 8mm. so what's the best way to measure the bolt? and how do I know what type I need?

What brand is the stand? Approximately how old is the stand?

Most stands these days are 8mm. Only pre-mid 90's Tamas and some off brand stuff used 6mm.

I'm not exactly sure but this one is pretty old and it has a bolt along with a wing nut instead of a tilter like newer ones

Nuts are measured by the width of the hex shape and by their thread pitch. Most nut and measurements come in either metric sizing or standard sizing. Strength of nuts and bolts is also considered a measurement and determined by their grade of alloy.

if you can take it to the drum shop, you should be able to size it and buy the correct wingnut at the same time. But I'm leaning towards 6mm from your description.
