The last gig I had was with an acoustic duo, Zeph. Depending on the circumstances, I pretty much did all of the above at one point or another. Either congas or a djembe (or sometimes both) was what I chose for the vast majority of situations. But there was certainly times where I used a kick, snare, hats and a ride.....and once or twice I even rolled up with a full kit because I deemed that to be the best choice for the situation. Other times the rig was just a snare drum and a splash. It all depended on the situation and after a couple of months at it, I got pretty adept at being able to judge what the right requirements would be according to the style of gig or the venue or even the set list etc.
For something I was reluctant to try my hand at, I actually had a blast doing it. A real hand percussionist would probably have flipped his lid at my "style", but I had a ball just belting out rhythms on hand drums. Thoroughly enjoyable gig while it lasted. And even more enjoyable it when all the set up/tear down consisted of was a djembe and a mic! Enjoy!!
