Pretty sure a 'mute stroke' is another name for a 'dead stroke.' It's essentially the opposite of a freestroke where instead of letting the stick naturally rebound you press it into the head to prevent the sustain of the drum. It's common in jazz (i can't seem to think of a YouTube video that would be a good demonstration of it), and I personally use it mostly in jazz solos (often in unison between floor tom and snare) and in some Brazilian beats where the floor tom is meant to mimic a surdo drum.

p.s. maybe watch some videos of Bad Plus playing "Flim" and you'll see Dave King playing plenty of very exaggerated dead strokes.
