Iv tried to get tickets for the upcoming december 11 show with Aerosmith but cant get a hold of any for a reasonable price. any ideas for what i can do, and will you guys be making a dvd for the tour.

Re: Steve Morrison - pro drum tech (Tommy Lee)

Hey steve are you comming down to NZ with Tommy on the Supernova tour?

If so have you started working on his setup yet, anything different from the Motley Crue one?

I'll post a bunch of better pics. That pic was before the kit was done. I have some killer Supernova kit pics too. They'll be up soon!

And yes Tommy plays to a click, sometimes.

Yes! I'll be there. We just finished up pre-production rehearsals for the tour today. The kit is looking pretty killer. It's a bit a different than the Motley kit.

Re: Steve Morrison - pro drum tech (Tommy Lee)

Sounds good, looking forward to seeing it.

I hope the sound is better than @ Tenaciuos D last night in AKL, will you guys be bringing your own crew and sound lighting etc?

Seems to be an area that could be improved compared with what i am used to in London....... perhaps it's the venues.

Re: Tommy's Current Touring Kit

We ended up naming this one the "Dog In A Blender" kit...

Remo Heads(top/btm): Snare-EmporerX/Hazy Amb Snare; Toms-Clr Pinstripe/clear or smooth white Ambassador; 26" Kick-Coated Powerstoke 3/Ebony Ambassador resonant w/mic port(muffling: pillow lightly touching both heads); 32" Kick-Smooth White Ambassador/Ebony Ambassdaor resonant w/mic port(no muffling)

We're also using Puresound 30-strand snares; Vater Slicknuts & Stick Holders

Hey, first off, Thanks for taking questions. Alot of techs dont usualy care about questions, but it seems you have token the time, so thank you. I only have 1 question, Tommy uses Ahead sticks, what do you think about them(or Tommy, if you could)? I am interested on buying them, but i'm scared that they will be to heavy, how long do they last, and how hard are they to control. I use Vic Firth 5b's right now, and they usualy last me 2 months. So im very interested in these.

Re: Steve Morrison - pro drum tech (Tommy Lee)

hi steve.

i'm hoping you could ask tommy a question for me.

in the August 1992 issue of modern drummer there was a great and useful article titled: THE 25 GREATEST DRUM RECORDS. because of it i bought steely dan's AJA in a time when i was almost exclusively addicted to AC/DC.
they wrote this article by researching across the industry but in particular they asked some of the top guys for their top ten selections. i'm hoping to do a similar thing here on DW and post the reults in a separate thread eventually.
So if you would be so kind please give us a list of your own top ten (perhaps your current top 10) records/albums. it would be helpful if you identified your favourite out of those and dropped in a line why it is so...but this is not totally necessary. think of it like if you were going to be locked in a remote log cabin for a whole winter, which 10 albums would you take, if 10 were all you could take?

thanks

Re: Steve Morrison - pro drum tech (Tommy Lee)

hey steve, two questions. one: in a zildjian ad for tommy's new cymbal and stick bags, it was a rear shot of tommy's drums. i noticed that he had a double pedal to his 26" bass, and no pedal on his big bass. does he ever use his 32"? or is it just for show. and the other, does tommy ever have a problem with breaking cymbals with his aheads? obviously not the z customs, but the k's and a customs? thanks.

Thanks man.
I cought one of the last shows here in Minneapolis, the kit looked great, and sounded pretty good when you played it during sound check. Its too bad Crue cut it short though, but the crowd was pretty weak, which sucked because i was really there to see them.

I can't wait to see the Supernova kit when you guys come here. I saw the DRUM! article and it looked pretty killer.

Re: Steve Morrison - pro drum tech (Tommy Lee)

I saw motley last november in houston, they kicked major ass. The pyrotechnics were amazing, tommy was amazing, along with the rest of the crue. I have a few questions, do you get to chill at all with the guys from Aerosmith, also how do the guys from aerosmith and motley get along? Concerning his drums does tommy like his setup only having one rack tom, do you ever think he'll have some monster setup with a bunch of toms. Also when i was at the show i noticed that tommy had a ton of stamina he was able to pound out the grooves perfectly with a ton of energy, does he ever get tired?

Thanks a ton.
P.S. tell tommy the strippers at the houston show were outstanding.

Re: Steve Morrison - pro drum tech (Tommy Lee)

Hey there Steevo. (great name by the way) i've been playing for 20 yrs and tommy has always been my biggest influence... hell, first tune i learned to play was "Louder Than Hell" from the theater of pain cd. you've got a ton of knowledge there dude. thanx for all the great pics and stuff. I'm actually workin on forming a motley tribute band. bought a new kit last summer... starclassic maple, 16x26, 10x14, 14x16, 16x18, 8x14 maple snare. it rocks. anyway was wonderin just what does tommy use that 32" kick for? or is it just for show? was thinkin it was for somethin since it's mic'd up. i've attached a pic of my kit from a gig from last month... very similar to his. i've gotten alot of his playing style down... stick spins, poppin sticks off the snare, etc. tribute band should be a great show once it's all together. i'm also using a roland spd-s sampling pad. was a little more economical for samples than a brain and pads and stuff. will keep ya posted on things. if you guys get close to baltimore again, would love to come say hey.

Steve

Re: steve morrison - pro drum tech

i just read through all the posts over the past couple days. AWESOME forum!

***Stu,
...as I was proofreading this post, Tommy replied to my email with:
"I have no idea bro!!!!"
That's funny stuff, but my best guess would be early 90's or so. I'll call DW on Monday and find out for you!***

I can tell you.... He switch in 1989 and the first show he played with DW was in Moscow and the Music/Peace Fest. This is also the year that he started with the 26" kick... 1 rack tom and 2 floors....

Steevo can back me up here.... I know a bit about Tommy's Gear over the years.... I have been an avid fan of Tommy's since 1983

just wanted to help you get the facts straight. you were correct on all posts on his kits except this one bro. tommy was still using pearl at the moscow peace fest. it was the custom painted kit with the skulls, crue harley style logo, naked chicks, etc. that kit went to the hard rock afterwards. it was in a playboy shoot ("girls of the hard rock hotel and casino" back in 94. (though they set it up all wrong of course) he also used a pearl kit on the dr. feelgood video shoot (that was set on fire) that fall.

also when he switched over to dw to do the feelgood tour in the fall of 89 the kick in that kit was a 28, not a 26.

not tryin to come off like a jerk or anything but when all that was goin on i was submersed in full on crue. lol
