Default How can I guage my abilities?

I have been practicing rock drumming for about a year now and I have been jamming with some friends for a couple weeks. They are very cool and accept that I am a amateur and i can sometimes mess up a groove pretty badly when I try something new. Anyway, I sort of feel like I'm holding them back as a band and that they won't tell me if I'm terrible or if they get totally bummed out when I ask them if they want to jam. You know how friends are.
How can I get some perspective on how good I am and if I have the potential to play in a band? How to guitarists guage the ability of their band mates?

Best bet is to jam with people you don't know, and see if you get called back. Other players judge your ability/results... not you.

A drummer is only as good as others think.

Being upfront with people is a good thing and at least you are even asking the question rather than "knowing" you're great.

I am relatively new to drumming and I can't play any covers. This is mainly due to me knowing that I lack technical abilities still. But I'm working on that.

I don't have a good answer to your question but, with me, I take lessons and see what I can and can't do. It also allows me to see my self getting better. Even things that are fairly simply, at first seem hard or weird. I'm talking basic beats that are written in a book. Sure I can play that sort of thing on my own but playing something while reading it has become very rewarding for me. It is also helping me to improve my independence. This has developed in a few weeks time for me. I think you would probably find what you're looking for from an instructor. They'll tell you like it is and are there to help on our weaknesses.

You're probably better than you think and with a little help could make a breakthrough.

They don't. Maybe they *gauge*... Sorry, couldn't resist - but you did that spelling mistake 2 times, that's 1 time too much to let you get away with it.
Please don't get me wrong, I just wanted to raise your awareness for language. ;-)

(Sorry again - that was dumb. I just returned from a 10 km run in 51:09 minutes, am gasping for air and saw that typo... What do you expect? Haha.)

Well, that's a pretty good indication that you know where your skill level is.

Are you just jamming with friends? Or are you the band drummer, now? You're not holding anyone back, if all you're doing is "jamming with friends". If they're soon to be getting gigs, then yeah, you might be holding them back. But if all you're doing is playing in the garage, no harm in that. If they need a better drummer, they'll probably go out and look for one.

That's easy, record yourself and listen. You should be able to form your own opinions of what worked and what didn't. If you need other POV's, just post it here. We'll judge you no problem!

+1, recording yourself and listening the next day or even later is a hell of an eye opener.

It can also be uplifting. A few months ago I made a crappy live recording of our latest attempt as a band and I was thrilled.

There were a few glaring errors but It was 10 times better than I thought it was going to be. It really lit a fire and I know I have made tremendous progress since then.

^ This. When your phone starts ringing, and other musicians want to jam with you, even the ones in other bands. That's also how you get better .Practice normally takes you so far,but playing with guys that are a better class of musician will just make you a better player.Sometimes the best way to learn is by doing.

Record everything you do.Thats the only way to know for sure if that fill was as good as it sounded when you played it.It's also a indicator of how well you keep time..
