Default Snare help for my jungle kit conversion?

Lately I have building my jazz chops so I have been fascinated by smaller kits. I was going to buy a catalina club, but realized that I dont use all of my drums from my 7pc Tama Starclassic Maple. So I created my own jungle kit. I really like how easy it is to transport. A problem I am facing is that it seems like my snare is over powering the bass. (Yes i can play lighter or tune lower).

I have been wanting a new snare maybe a jazzier softer sound. Any suggestions? Some snares I saw at GC was a 12x5 Yamaha stage custom birch, 12x5 Maple Pork Pie. Im scared they might be a little to high pitched.

It might just be a matter of tuning. Whether I use a 12" or a 14", I tune them to the same "B" note, and generally get the same crack and volume out of either. If you are aiming for jazz, try out some 3" deep piccolos at tight and loose tunings and see if that does it for you. I would say a 10" snare could also bring the volume down, but there's that high pitch lurking in the thing that you might object to.

When I did jazz stuff in high school, I just took a 14", tuned it medium to medium high, and set the snare tension to maximum sensitivity (the slightest touch gets snare buzz was my goal). After that, I could adjust the volume off the floor.

I like a 5.5x13 maple. I have a Black Panther that I love.
I also use a 5x14 wooden snare for my jungle kit.
Nice Job on your kit. It looks good.

well I also looking for an excuse to buy a new snare, this is the reason I came up with to justify it haha...So I can leave mine cranked for my hiphopish/pop stuff im doing, and another one for my practice and jazz playing.

....im also tweeking the set up of this. I want to minimize the amount of hardware. So im going to maybe put the 12" on a snare stand clamp the snare from the tom (my friend has done this and its stable and sits comfy.), clamp the crash to the hi hats. Ill post pics once again when I finally set this.

I use a Pearl M80 Firecracker on my cocktail set, 10 by 4, and I love the way it sounds. It doesn't have the throat of a larger or deeper snare but it has plenty of snap and character.

Very good job on creating your own kit. I would have this this was OEM. Great work.

Would definitely go with the lil Squealer...

I'm using the 12" with my jazz kit during rehersal and the band is loving it...when I showed up with the original 14" that came with the kit - they were not so loving it.
