Default I Just Got Called For A Weird Gig

"Just when I think I'm out they pull me back in..."

The last thing I was expecting was to get a call for a gig but it just happened. The keyboard player from my jazz band, which no longer exists, plays with a band that does Frank Sinatra/Rat Pack/big band crooner music and they need a sub, so he called me.

What makes the gig weird is that the band will be the opening act for a boxing match. Anyway that's weird to me.

Another thing that's weird is that there are no charts. The keyboard player's going to bring me a CD of the tunes. Most unusual for a gig like this.

The money's good, it's a high-class scenario and we even get fed. I haven't played my drums in many months but this will be a piece of cake since the music doesn't call for any "muscle."

Must start practicing, though.

Sounds like an interesting gig - but why haven't you played for months?

I'm basically retired from drumming. I'm focusing on composing these days. Also, I'm an
old guy! Been playing since I was a pup.

Who's on the card?? :-)

If I were to ever develop my style beyond my 'one trick pony-ness' rock thing, the big band sound is what I'd find most appealing I think. I remember as a youngster, watching the old man mix it up in that genre from time to time. Man, I loved watching all those instruments together on the one stage.

Looks like retirement is taking a back seat.....at least for one more gig. I'm sure it'll be a blast.

every time i see your avatar photo i have to look twice to make sure it's not mickey rourke! or is it him??(before he got all mugged up).

so maybe this whole "scenario", including the fight, has a mystic, deeper meaning we can't understand......

Good luck man, let us know how it goes! I find sometimes the not so well choreographed plans end up turning around and being a great experience!

Hell, you should probably know all those tunes anyway. Show up and have fun, I love me some Rat Pack music when I get to play it!

Hey there J, just because you (attempted) to stop gigging doesn't mean you have to stop posting!

Good luck with the gig.

J, it's easy to see why you decided to forgo the comfort of retirement for this one. Way too many pluses to pass up.

Break a leg!

I have no idea who's on the card. I hate boxing.

And it's not a "real" big band. Who's got that kind of dough these days? Just enough to pull off scaled-down arrangements I'm sure.

Yeah, Polly, I made sure that it would something I'd be able physically to pull off. This is one of those gigs where taste and subtlety are the order of the day, which is perfect for me. If it had been a "chops gig" I'd have had to turn it down.

J, the boxing goes both ways - it's ugly in itself but at the same time I can't imagine a boxing "chops gig" so it's in your favour.

Our singer used to MC at strip shows. He had no interest in naked women - or the boofheads who'd attend - but he said they were some of the most enjoyable hosting gigs he's done.

Funny how these things work.

I had an opportunity, that ended up falling through, to play at some skeezie all nude bar here in town. I agreed to take the gig just for the cash and the opportunity but I really wasn't 100% about it. I was kind of relieved when the gig ended up falling through.

Now a boxing match on the other hand? I'd jump on that gig like stink on a monkey. I enjoy watching boxing and it'd make for a wonderful story for the books.

Out of curiosity Jay, what sort of tunes do they want you to play?

Oh, it'll be tunes such as "The Way You Look Tonight," "The Summer WInd," "Lady Be Good," "Fly Me To the Moon," "I've Got You Under My Skin," all that sort of stuff.

I was playing that music when I was still a teenager, and hating every minute of it. But I got an education!

It's an awkward genre to be playing at a sporting event. Nonetheless, accept the gig and do what you do - it can only make you better.

Maybe a jazz cover of Pat Benatar's Hit Me With Your Best Shot?

Depends. It's not my cup of tea, but boxing audiences can be quite diverse. Besides, the ringmaster will already be wearing his tux.

within days of each other - a funeral, playing for a belly dancer and then a gig in a hotel room!
