Default Refinish or re-wrap?

I have a Gretsch catalina mahogany shell pack that I picked up new. The kit sounds great..I am just not too fond of the wrap finish

Has anyone here on the boards ever refinished a mahogany kit? I know the wood is dark to begin with..So maybe just a clearcoat?

Anyone?? pix??

I also have the option of re-wrapping the shells.

Are you talking about the Tattoo kit? If so you may have a hard time getting the finish off that is on their now. I would say wrap it but it will cost s few pennies.

Yeah, I am not real sure how much adhesive Gretsch uses on their wraps. It doesn't seem like the wraps are held in place with contact cement, so I'm guessing they used double backed Hi-Bond style adhesive..
I'm thinkin maybe a black sparkle or black diamond pearl wrap. The shell hardware and hoops are black powdercoat. I kinda wish this kit had regular chrome HW. with the black stuff, I have to be careful what color/design I wrap them in so I don't make them look cheesier than they already do.

Well if the current kit is a wrap I would rewrap. No telling what the outer ply of mahogany will look like. But to be honest I would wait. They didn't make too many of those sets and who knows what it may be worth down the road.
