Default Tell me your favorite Phil Collins' songs to play

I'm a huge PC fan and always find that playing his music, whether from Genesis, solo, with Clapton, whatever, always makes me happy behind the kit and I actually have fun trying to learn those songs (even if I don't get them right...lol).

This week I've been working with Paperlate and I Don't Care Anymore (great for making use of those new Stage Custom toms!)...two very different songs but having not too bad results with both of them. Of course, I'm not matching them note for note but close enough for rock and roll, right? :)

Anyways, do you have any good Phil songs that you enjoy playing and that might be good for a mediocre player such as myself to attempt to play around with?

Mine are probably 'Abacab' and 'Something Going On' by Frida.

The medley's from The Longs from the We Can't Walk album...

Some of the drumming is simply sublime...as good as I've ever heard.

Easy Lover. Played it a few times live, always great fun! Both grooving unison stuff and places where there's opportunities from some mild shredding :p I also really enjoy playing Another Day In Paradise and In The Air Tonight (absolute classic drum break!). They're quite the challenge, because you have to leave so much space to make them work.

Phil played drums on Robert Plant's "In the Mood".
I find it a good tune for nice slow 16ths on the hat, if you wish to work that.
'Duke' is also a great hi energy number.

I've got 4 for you, Mary! Classic Genesis (with and without Peter Gabriel). These are are slow to mid tempo and don't have tricky changes:

"Afterglow" from Wind and the Wuthering:

"After the Ordeal" from Selling England By the Pound:
(The drums come in at 2:09)

"Squonk" from Trick of the Tail:
(Some of the fills might be trickier, but the basic beat isn't)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzL-up4ZKgI

"Time Table" from Foxtrot:

Have not had a chance to play one yet except for a crack at Carpet Crawlers about 25 years ago but my choice would be Cinema Show, I love that song and never ever get tired of listening to it and the drumming has so much feel and groove.

Never played it, but "Driving The Last Spike" is one of my favourite Genesis songs.

It's CT in the video. I think Phil played on the album cut.

I always liked Lilywhite Lilith on The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Dodo from Abacab, Smacks of Euphoric Hysteria on Unorthodox Behaivior, and I always really liked the short but sweet Wot Gorilla on Wind and Wuthering. Phil was a pretty kick ass drummer I think.

*I was just listening to the song Nubian Sundance on the Mysterious Traveller album by Weather Report and it strikes me that the basic beat is virtually identical to what Phil plays Wot Gorilla- go figure!

I have many favorites from old Phil, mainly from his solo albums...

But I love this one, Woman In Chains, the opening track from Tears For Fears 1989 album The Seeds Of Love, Phil's groove and fills are incredible, not an easy song to play, I agree, but very inspiring, even if you don't do all the stuff he does :)

opentune: Phil played drums on Robert Plant's "In the Mood".

I love all PC's works, and some amazing stuff outside Genesis too. Two of so many favorites:

Horizontal Departure - Robert Plant's Principle of Moments

I find Bill Buford and PC's play amazing on Slipperman/Afterglow from Three Sides Live

Peace,

Phil was my original drumming hero and responsible for me taking up drums in the first place. His playing is so diverse over the years that there is something for everyone in there. His 80's/90's stuff with Clapton (Bad Love) as well as his playing with Brand X and all points in between never fail to inspire me. If I had to choose just one track that does it for me, then perhaps the predictable "Apocalypse in 9/8" section from Supper's Ready does it the most for me.

I have to admit that Bad Love is one of my all time favorite songs. I call it my theme song and am thinking of making a tattoo out of it.

Good suggestions. A lot of the Genesis and Brand X tracks mentioned are advanced drumming. When I was young I used to play along with Trick of the Tail and the first Brand X album and it was all a great big fudge. If I'd recorded myself I might have given up in horror!

Mary, I'd suggest In the Air Tonight. A comfortable tempo with much fun to be had later on. You could simplify the syncopations later in the song and gradually work up to them.

Repeat 100x, always refining, while focusing on keeping relaxed and comfortable. Each day you will find yourself getting a little better playing at the song (discounting human frailty and variability).

Patience is key.

And here I was just about to congratulate the whole thread on the not mentioning that song front. Oh well. That can only last so long.

I always liked "I Don't Care Anymore", as far as phil's songs go. Cool, beat-y song.

You're right, Anon. That's why I whittled it down to the four I posted above. Phil plays fairly simple and straight on them, and at a slow tempo. The Brand X and some of the other Genesis stuff are great just for inspiration, if only for listening.

Since you mentioned "In the Air Tonight", it also reminded me of a couple of tracks from Peter Gabriel's 3rd album: "Intruder" & "No Self Control". Phil and Jerry Marotta trade off on the tracks and it's kind of interesting because there are no cymbals on entire album.

Yes, some responded more to the title than Mary's OP. (BTW Mary, you're not mediocre, you're inexperienced).

Sorry John, the only song I remembered well was Squonk, and it's quite an involved arrangement. Yes, the first two especially are very manageable. A few others, like Easy Lover, seem approachable.

I'm not a big fan of his early Genesis stuff, but I do quite like "Turn it on again" from the Duke album. Musically it does this turn around in there that makes it quite satisfying to play.

From a Genesis view, it is Chester more than Phil, so I prefer CT on the kit and PC singing, as he is a better vocalist than drummer.

IN THE CAGE, learned both parts LIVE, then made my own hybrid version, almost 30 years ago

While Chester usually played pretty close to what Phil played in Genesis, there are a few tunes where his parts really improved on the original, and In The Cage is easily one of those. The version that shows up on Three Sides Live is absolutely incredible.

Ah, great though Chester is, he is only playing the parts that Phil invented. Phil is every bit the drummer that Chester is and they complimented one another beautifully. I had the luck of seeing them play together 4 times live (3 with Genesis, once with Phil solo) and its fair to say there was a great deal of mutual respect and a similar (very high) level of ability in each case.

In response to Grea's earlier post, yes I did get a bit carried away with the odd time signature stuff- it is purely aspirational though, I can't play them for toffee (not accurately anyway). Many too Many from ... and then there were three was always a favourite practice tune, as was Turn it on Again- which is in 13/8 and makes people struggle when they dance to it because it sounds like it should be in 4/4.

And yes not a bad vocalist too.

I could not disagree more, Sir Rim. Phil is an outstanding drummer and a pretty average vocalist (by world standards).

I refer you to these academic articles for reference ;-)

Couldn't disagree more. Chester is a good drummer no doubt, but lets not recall that from a Genesis view he is in fact a *cover* drummer, covering Phils drumming......and Phil makes great drumming.

I'm going to agree with "In the Mood" from Robert Plant. I love the groove Phil lays down. It's not hard, but it'll improve your discipline and feel.

The other one I would suggest in "Misunderstanding." It's not too hard either, and is in 6/8 so you can work on yet another type of groove.

Have fun! Phil's a great drummer.

The beauty of OPINION, nobody is wrong.

CT intrepeted the songs and made them better in my opinion.

I would hire CT over PC every time.

You could also put a pic of Phils kit in the "tom angle" thread........lol

Have seen Genesis 6 times live before Abacab was released, twice the purchased seats
were behind stage, to watch CT. I went to watch CT play and listen to PC sing.

In the older concerts right after PG split, the double drumming was tasteful and Phil
took a backseat to Chester, complimenting him.

If you look at some Paris 2007 video, there were times CT was idle as Phil was giving
it his last hurrah on the kit, same old sticking and many rolls around the toms.

If you want to call Chester a "cover" drummer, then consider reading about his history
a bit more before assigning that label.

Wanna challenge? Dissect both parts of the intro for Behind the Lines and merge them
into single play. That will get you going.

Gotta say I never expected this much of a response on this thread. Loving all of the discussion. I defnitely have a long list to work with.

Never thought of In The Mood, will most certainly check that one out.

I'm not going to get into the PC/CT debate or even the one of how good of a drummer PC is in general, all I know is that it seems that just about whatever music he does, it makes me happy and makes me want to play and that, for me, kind of says it all. There are a lot of other drummers out there that I admire and enjoy but few that just make me feel like, "hell yeah, I can get out there and do that too and have fun at it! "

Now go have fun and Happy Drumming!

Fantastic song, great album. I did not know that Collins is on that track. I own the CD and Vinyl but I never really bothered to check the liner notes. Now that I am playing the song in my head I can hear it, it is so in his wheel house.

Now go have fun and Happy Drumming!
Good point,He certainly exudes his goodwill in his playing.

So many fun songs to play. Cinema Show/Aisle of Plenty, Apocalypse in 9/8, Wot Gorilla, Unquiet Slumbers for the Sleepers. Fly on a Windsheild is a special favorite, one of the heaviest drum parts I've ever heard. I love listening to a lot of his Brand X stuff, but am too chicken to try most of that, LOL.

Yeah, it's a great pop album, the title track The Seed Of Love is very Beatles influenced, good drummers all around on the entire album:

Manu Katché, Chris Hughes, Phil Collins, Simon Phillips...

Just a few amateur drummers, lol.

Sorry for the derail Mary :)

One piece of Phil's drumming that never gets mentioned is Do They Know It's Christmas, the Band Aid charity single. Apparently he nailed it in 2 takes and considering the people who were in that room watching him and the pressure he was under to deliver on time I consider it to be amongst his best work.

It's actually a really nice groove and although the toms get lost in the mix a bit (thank Midge Ure working all night with no sleep for that) I think you'd really enjoy having a go at it.
