Default What is Mark playing in this song?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-buKkclKYg

This is the fantastic Mark Guiliana in Avishai Cohen's group, playing the Young Maestro.

The up-tempo drumming parts - are they just fast comping? He's got such a light touch. I'm referring specifically to the section that starts at about 0:30. I can't quite work it out, the snare hits seem so fast.

Any ideas?

It seems to be come kind of fusion between fast jazz combing and drum and bass / breakbeats, especially at around the 3:00 mark.

Does that sound about right?

It's hard to hear exactly what's happening early on because his cymbal is so feathery, but when you hear broken up ride cymbal and light, busy SD at that tempo, it usually means there's some kind of paradiddle-based stuff afoot. Paradiddles, paradiddle-diddles and their inversions, and also the inverted doubles (referenced in Luke's Gadd lick thread) are all good for that. Also the simple 3/16 lick RLL- I don't if that actually has a name.

I definitely hear the diddles. Is he "diddling" between the ride and snare, or bringing both hands onto the snare, and comping the rest?

This would work, so it may be something along these lines five into the hits two paradiddles.

For the thing I'm talking about, the RH would be on the cymbal, the LH on the SD.
