Default Gig Report (WARNING: Contains Self-Delusional Awesomeness)

Last night my band played a gig, our first truly "public" gig. We were invited to play as the closer to an end of year concert at the Sydney Vocal Arts Academy. That meant we were preceded by small choirs and some exceptionally good solo singists. So that was a bit daunting.

And we frickin' nailed it! People were dancing throughout our set (well 'cept for a Who-styled version of Summertime Blues which proved a good dance floor clearer). The organiser was very complimentary of our performance and also of our song choices.

Of course there were errors made, but nothing that brought the mood down. Even when the guitars and bass started "Gimme Some Lovin' " in at least two different keys, we just called a halt and re-started. Everybody in the band had heaps of fun and the audience enjoyed the performance. I'll call that a success.

I had a drooping mic stand (never happened to me before, honestly, must be nerves), which was un-fixable, which meant that by the end of the evening I was singing into me erm, lap.

While I was playing I could feel my right hand forefinger almost blistering, which kinda surrprised me, 'cause I've never had that before. At a guess I was just playing a little harder than usual. This morning I wear my rock 'n roll injury with enormous pride.

One of the choirs included a drummer person who was sort of known to me, and I'd agreed to let her use my kit for a song. So, why, in the name of all that is holy, did she feel the need to adjust two of my cymbal stands just to play one song that was money beat all the way with the occasional cymbal crash on '1'?

On the way home, my car radio was tuned to the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation, non-commercial, government-funded radio) because I'd been listening to the cricket on the drive through. And I heard this, on an Aussie country music program, which is just too good not to share:

Very cool story and sounds like a memorable night. Singing in your lap... That made me grin. Thanks.

I followed until you got to the dung beetle. :)

Anyway, congrats on the satisfying gig.

But wait...there's more.

Here is the set list we played:
  • A Hard Dayís Night
  • I Only Want To Be With You
  • Iím A Believer
  • Gimme Some Loviní
  • Go Your Own Way
  • Summertime Blues
  • Day Tripper
  • April Sun in Cuba
  • Mustang Sally

Two of those are unlikely to be known outside 'Straya. So, in case you're interested:

I also have to wake up at a quarter to poo because I work at a crap job too.

Sounds like a good one if you enjoyed it. Bummer about the mic stand. At least it wasn't a bass drum pedal or worse.

Love the dung clip. Should have been a song taken on board by The Beatles ;)

Adjusting crash stands for one song is just not cool, but hey, you sucked it up.

Congratulations on your first gig. Great to have it go so well for you & provide such a positive memory.

Yay, I knew you would be brilliant, largely because you are. Not hugely keen on the dung beetle song, if I'm being totally honest, but it did make me smile a little bit.

I shall reply properly later, probably when I have Stuff to tell you tomorrow. In the meantime, I am envious of your industrial injury!

Great stuff, James, that's set me up for the day :D

Random thought - until I read your set list it had never occurred to me that 'Go your own way' and 'Day Tripper' have almost the same tom tom beat...

Sounds like a fun gig. Classic pub rock, and even the mishaps sound funny afterwards...

Great gigs rule. Very few highs like really locking in with your music partners and really delivering.

I was under the impression you gig'd regularly based on your posting...

Thanks all, for your kind words.

'Cept those who didn't like the dung beetle song.

@Morrisman - You've lost me. I hear (and play) Day Tripper with my only use of the toms being a roll across the snare and first tom in the intro, while Go Your Own Way uses lots of toms...so I don't get that similarity.

@Dr_Watso - We've played some gigs before this, but they were all parties where we knew at least some of the people. This was our first gig 'in the wild'.

Video has surfaced...

I realise that in two vids that I have posted, we're playing Beatles songs. We do play songs by other bands...promise!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVRN5Pn7Tx0

What I really like about this vid, is that the guys in the band all look happy to be there.

Yes indeed, as is the audience, smiling and dancing :)

Very cool performance JJ... but you shouldn't hide behind a cymbal!

1st gig into the wild, you guys can be proud of yourselves :D

Thank you very much, MAD.

I am so not a shrinking violet, so it's kinda ironic my being hidden behind the kit.
