Default Bassist Mike Porcaro Dies

Toto bassist Mike Porcaro died early this morning after a long battle with ALS ... TMZ has learned.
Porcaro's brother and band mate Steve posted on Facebook that Mike was surrounded by family at home and passed away peacefully in his sleep at 12:04 AM.
Mike joined the band Toto in 1983 alongside his brothers Steve and Jeff, but retired in 2007 due to ALS. Mike played bass on some of the bands biggest hits, including ... "Rosanna," "Africa," and "I Won't Hold You Back."

Another great talent left us way too soon. A local bass player I used to play with has this dreadful disease. Let's hope a cure is found soon. Rest in peace Mike Porcaro.

I feel really bad for Joe.

Joe is such a nice man and was a great teacher back in the day.

To lose not just one, but two sons, wow, I can't even imagine.

I've been away for a short while, & return to the forum to hear this dreadful news. Mike's condition has taken him out of playing for a while now. I remember Steve Lukather mentioning Mike's condition when I saw Toto in 2010. I didn't realise that the tour was partially to raise money for Mike's medical expenses - after their earlier split. I've been a long time admirer of Mike's work. A player who was always out of the limelight, yet was so instrumental in the music's foundation it was difficult to miss. "Tasteful" doesn't even begin to describe his contributions, but its the nearest I can get in one word.

Of course, this is the big one. Life can be so cruel, & a parent having to say goodbye to a child is top of the list. Twice is just plain torture.

RIP Mike - I always thought of you as one of the best.
