In answer to your final question. Maybe they're really good friends. Or maybe, like the Smiths, the head honchos were ripping the drummer off all the years they were together. Who knows.

Personally I quite like CW. Horses for courses. Not a Stones fan though. Bleurgh. But clearly enough are to suggest that they had something good going on.
You are right, it is all about opinions.

Charlie is no where near being my fav drummer, but to claim a drummer with his playing and recording history, not to mention his Jazz playing, sucks, is just plain nonsense. To say you are not impressed by his playing, or its not your genre is fine, but to diss a fellow drummer, and a pro with 50 years experience of playing on some iconic music is not on.

I assume the poster is merely saying it to generate a response.

I was never much into Watts until at some point (late 80's, early 90's??) I saw an interview with Keith Richards on TV where he discussed Watts.

He said what he loved about Watts was they can be in the studio, and Charlie will say "we could play the drums like this" put on a click and he would play the drum track perfectly to the click, and then Charlie would say "but what we should do is this" and then Charlie would play the track, pushing the beat in certain sections, and pulling it back in other sections to make the track feel just right for the song.

And feel is big part of why the Stones have been so popular over the years.
