Slayer - War Ensemble (Single Bass Version)

It's a bit of a contrast from my last upload (a Bee Gees cover) but I guess that's the beauty of having an eclectic taste in music

Yes I know it's not the same without double bass but by playing alternating 16ths between the right hand and kick it gives a similar result. Something I've only recently started practicing and admittedly it's far from perfect. Work in progress....

Of all the thrash metal bands out there the only one I've ever really got into was Slayer. Not that I don't have upmost respect for all thrash metal drummers (mainly from a stamina point of view) but Lombardo has an organic thing going on which appeals to me.. (He says triggering sounds on an E kit) ;) But anyway...when I practice I usually finish off with War Ensemble as a final burn out. Mainly because it kills my right hand... especially when trying to play it with any sort of energy.

I found the stems here on youtube:

Played with plenty of energy and the kit sounds great (what VST's are you using)?
In all honesty playing this song without double bass is like watching the Simpsons without Homer. Fills weren't too bad (probably could have put in more notes for that solo fill rather than having that awkward pause in the middle) but good job overall!

Cheers Toddmc,

I'm using superior drummers Evil drums library.

Yes I know what you mean but I'm not pretending to be Dave Lombardo.. or any thrash metal drummer and admittedly it's a style of playing I've never been any good at! Not to say I don't appreciate speed metal guys but I'm more inspired by the keep it simple and hit em hard approach...Dave Grohl, Dale Crover for example.

I haven't studied it enough to copy any of his fills note for note. I actually quite like that awkward pause as you say in the solo bit. A bit of a breather before it kicks back in again.... yes it's not the same as the original but not intended to be... or maybe I just ran out of steam... ok I admit it! Haha

Edit: I'm guessing by your picture you're a speed metal guy...got anything I can check out?

I think toontrack stopped doing it for some reason but you can still find it if you shop about... here for example: http://www.inta-audio.com/computer-...41/toontrack-joe-barresi-evil-drums-sdx-p3444

I'm not even sure what the sounds are like on my module.. but I'm guessing simular to yours...

Had a listen to your War Ensemble... and after your comment having a go at my fills and saying it's not bad, I was half expecting to be blown out of the water but have to say it left me fairly unimpressed. So in return and for a bit of critique, your double bass playing sounds incredibly flammy and sloppy to my ears and sloppy double bass in a track is about as welcome as the Simpsons without Homer! And it's a shame you didn't play a few extra notes on that drum fill solo bit... leaving an uncomfortable pause! ;) Sorry couldn't resist

But anyway, I'm all for people criticising my playing... it's all useful and learning... but please!! At least have the ability yourself to back it up!!

Sorry rant over!

Not my stuff at all Stoney, but I think you did one hell of a job there. Plenty of power, & a good sprinkle of "old school rock" in the vibe, especially your snare fills :)

I'm a big fan of your playing in general. To me, you're a drummer's drummer, with the ability to really lay it down. I can't wait to hear you on an 'A' kit again :)

Thanks Andy. Really appreciate it. Hope all's well with you and your beautiful drums.

Next time I'm out gigging/recording I'll try and get around to doing a vid... You know what it's like though..it's generally the last thing on your mind ;)

Here's a vid I did recently though for one of the bands I'm involved with. It's just a cheap promo vid... but I am playing an acoustic kit :)

Superb! I like the song too. Grit, simplicity, drive, & class all in one package :)

Oh well, what can I say - it was my first cover after all : )

Apologies for being a bit harsh earlier...it's just your original comment came across like you were some sort of seasoned thrash metal double bass playing lightning fast drum god or something ;) and after watching your vid it rattled me a bit..

But from what you say and for it being your first cover (or do you mean video of one). Either way job well done. Hats off!

Peace!! :)

Yeah mate, I was a bit harsh as well (aww, it's turning into a real love-fest isn't it)? ; )
By no means would I ever claim to be anywhere near the drumming God that Lombardo is and I'll take your sloppy double bass comments on the chin because it's a valid point.
To be honest I'm glad someone finally gave me some feedback (apart from my old mate Arky) and while it's nice to hear "Good job", etc I think constructive feedback (even if negative) helps us all strive to be better drummers.
